….Bruce Rioch could be a bit of a dog. Wouldn’t have trusted him going into a tackle.
I don't think he could tackle properly. Just clumsily threw himself in - and he was a big powerful lad! Tackled like the converted forward he was - a bit like Whiteside (who somehow never got sent off in his career until he signed for us!)

I still cringe when I think of some of Rioch's 'tackles'.

Reidy was the 'General' and if you hurt one of his teammates then God help you because you just knew you would end up paying for it in spades.

IIRC I think it may have been either Bracewell or Sheedy got on the rough end of a bad tackle v Telford (?) in the early stages of a cup tie at GP. I think it took Reidy less than five minutes to level the offending player with a tackle which would probably see him getting a season long ban nowadays but for which he only got a booking. The Telford (?) player who probably thought he would try and make his name by bossing the big boys went off for his own good having learned a very salutory and painful lesson. Those were the days - even Ron Atkinson when Manure manager alluded as such when he said summat like 'when you hurt one of Everton's players the big brothers will come looking for you!'

Men of steel!

John Hurst was no mug either in a quieter sort of way.
Oh most of them could look after themselves, but, Morrissey was a very tough cookie. Nobody got the better of him physically and he gave the trinity the space and time to do their thing. He was also an exceptionally tricky winger who was a good striker of a football.

It's been quite a while since we have had a sense of fight within the players and its something I have missed.

The 95 midfield partnership of Horne and Parkinson was pure heart and fight and I hope Gueye and Onana can match that effort.

I was a child when we had Bracewell and Reid bossing the midfield but would like to hear from the older generation of what their fave partnerships in Midfield have been.
Am I now categorised as the older generation? Ffs
