We need a slotter next season who can play off DCL, not replace him. Converting more of the opportunities we're now creating has to be a priority.

He would have been perfect in the days of two up front. Wins headers, does all the hard work and his hold up play is good. Not sure we can sacrifice one of the other positions for an old fashioned goal hanger poacher to play with him. Hopefully experience and confidence will help with his finishing.

Agree with this, and at the risk of sounding all Steve Walsh, do we need a "slotter"?
If Richarlison is to continue to improve, he should be looking at 15 goals next season, if Gylfi had put his penaltys away he would be on 15 too.
All dom needs to do i think in terms of goals is turn his 6-8 goals into maybe 12 goals

What a stupid responce, that basically just says that no matter how wrong you may be proven you are going to stick to an opinion based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever.
You related to Jonny Cochran?
Not really, I am merely saying that DCL having a 1:6 on target strike ratio does not make him automatically a bad striker and neither does the fact that Aguero has a 1:5 ratio mean that by extension DCL is nearly as good as Aguero. DCL didn’t score yesterday so his goal stats will not have improved yet he was deservedly MOTM. He does need to add goals to his game but he is improving almost week by week at the moment and I would like to see him being given plenty of game time next season even with the addition of another striker. I don’t want us to sign two strikers as that would probably stall his development at a critical stage of his career.

Yes I agree with all of this.

I caste my mind back to 2004-5. Once Bent left the side, in favour of the more prolific Beattie the results didn't return. Bent didn't score many goals but he helped the team enormously.

For a similar reason I'd have signed Stracalursi who was a threat. Arguably our best football under Moyes came with Cahill/Fellaini through the middle who were a menace to opponents without every scoring bundles of goals.

Don't get me wrong, if we can sign a Harry Kane, or even a Lukaku then I'd do that. I think it's extremely unlikely though. And frankly if we had Lukaku I'd find a way to play 2 up front, as he would have scored bundles more goals with Calvert Lewin alongside him (he'd be the perfect foil for Rom).

I agree with Silva too. For me we need to find a lad with pace, who can play across the front 3 (so if DCL form dips, he needs a break, he's injured) he can fill in and also in some games someone who is capable of playing alongside Calvert Lewin if we are chasing the game.

That player is completely different to both Niasse & Tosun.

I still think Calvert Lewin will score between 10-15 league goals next season, which if done alongside driving defenses back will be absolutely fine for me. He may even surprise us all and continue to improve his finishing.

I know where you are coming from mate, Bent was immense that season and it really was a surprise when he left the following summer, DCL has similar attributes if not a bit more savy and a higher headroom to develop. Like we were talking about i think there needs to be a mental shift form an out and out forward to the concept of hybrid footballers and positions, a rotating front three during a game who are all comfortable playing a wide role and central one depending on the in game situation.

When i think of our best strikers of recent years i think of the YAk and Rom, i do however feel that neither would be a good fit for us under Silva. When i look at the side i see key attributes looked for as mobility, adaptability, athleticism and critically and engine and a desire to press. I think its pretty straight forward what we want in a striker offensively to compliment DCL, yet the defining factor will be the role they can play defensively.

The high press is critical to what we want to do, its why DCL has been effective, the constant pressure was telling in our last few games, that starts from front to back. Most strikers dont have that natural skill set, i can think of very few who are prolific and also have the high press capabilities, or need to be coached to get there. Thats why i say a Lukaku or Yak signing wouldn't work for us. To be honest i see us going for someone more in the Andy Johnson mold, quick mobile, good work rate and engine with the ability to slot. I think we can expect that type of addition up front. In actual fact someone like Sandro isnt miles of it, but i think that bridge may be burned or im being to hopeful.

One of my bug bears is that we seem absolutely inept at signing forwards, hopefully that is about to change, but we have Sandro, Niasse, Tosun still on our books, Kone, Valencia before that by a very big margin signing forwards has been by far our worst area to try and recruit, we have been terrible.

Like i say hopefully that will change.

I think part of the issue with the way people see the lad is we have something of an odd discourse with him. The latest being centred around him not scoring enough goals. His goals to minute ratio is very commendable though (considering he hasn't had a long run up until the last few games). The truth is he doesn't have more goals because he hasn't played that much. More broadly though it is important to tackle the question head on.

I am not convinced the lad scores 20+ per season. While I wouldn't rule out he would get to that point (as there have been substantial improvements in his game) -if he started around 30 games, given this season's statistics he is going to be around 15+ league goals already I do think it's important to note the impact he has on the team as a whole.

He terrorised Arsenal for long periods yesterday. It was the closest thing I've seen to Ferguson in the mid 90's who also defeated teams on his own at times without necessarily having to score or create a goal himself. He pinned the opposition back and made it extremely difficult to be able to press up the pitch as we could build sustained pressure very quickly by going over a press and getting the ball in their final third.

I've said for a long time the 2 things he has which are remarkable are his speed/strength and secondly his aerial prowess. The complain I often had was how well he utilised both of these. Whats without doubt is both have come in this season (the aerial prowess far more so, for me he still has a lot to go with both aspects but particularly how to utilise his speed across the ground). He has come on though and he is learning how to use both of them more each time he plays.

To me it's no coincidence the best football for Richarlinson, Coleman, Sigurdsson, Gomes and Bernard are with him in the team. If he allows all of the above to play better and produce better output then it becomes something of a mute point how many goals he does or doesn't score, as his influence on the team allows them to do so. Richarlinson has been asked to do lots of Calvert Lewin's work but never looked entirely happy doing it.

None of this means we shouldn't look to sign another striker, particularly one who can play across the front 3 positions. I think Brands is spot on in his analysis with that. Buy a young centre forward who can operate in the wide positions and who can learn off Calvert Lewin. What is certain though, if he keeps terrorising defences it will have to be some player to shift him.

Honestly, the way we play at our best doesn't really lend itself to a 20 goal a year striker. Silva clearly wants to attack with pace, creating space through movement towards the goal, and having a front four that are all capable of 15 goals a season. While I'm sure he would love Dom to put 20 away a season, I don't think that's the criteria we should be judging him on. As you rightly point out "To me it's no coincidence the best football for Richarlinson, Coleman, Sigurdsson, Gomes and Bernard are with him in the team. If he allows all of the above to play better and produce better output then it becomes something of a mute point how many goals he does or doesn't score, as his influence on the team allows them to do so". I think that's spot on.

He played very well and will I think continue to do so. It is not just about scoring but chances created and putting yourself about to upset defences.

I'd take a 10-15 striker who plays like that rather than a 20 goal "fox in the box" any day. Rico, Bernard and Iceland should have filled their boots yesterday on the back of DCL's efforts.

Absolutely. If we want to be a really good side we have to put games to bed when we are playing well. Arsenal should never have got to the last few mins of that game yest with even having a sniff of getting a draw. Same with west ham game. Good perfomances but id love to see us punish teams by being more ruthless. Saying that. Up until a few weeks ago i would have taken any sort of win.

I doubt marco and brands are looking at a typical 9 to bring in, they will probably look for someone who is versatile to play on the wings aswell or as a 10. DCL is only going to increase his valuation from here on out, and a second season battling for that role with another young player will push him on to the next level

He is doing great and I am very happy for him he is keeping defenses off balance. That being said another target man will be needed to be purchased to mix things up a bit. So I am sure Brands should have one earmarked.

His all round game has improved so much and the run of games has given him the confidence to play that lone striker role and really trouble the centre backs. He just need to be more clinical now. We still need other options up front but he can be one of them going forward now.
