Yes I agree with you. That was my point, that we can't really claim that playing for us at 20 'had to take its toll' but playing in the Champions League and for your national team at 19 is fine. It's an excuse, basically.

The truth is DCL is no where near the standard Shearer was at the same age.

I was making the point based on stats, ie number of games played and goals scored.

Also, Shearer didn't play regularly in his earlier years.

Shearer was 24 when Blackburn won the league. However, his 25th birthday was just three months later. So really there's a three year difference between the careers of DCL and Shearer in terms of goal scoring trajectory. Hopefully, DCL will help us win the league when he's 25!

As for Messi, you have completely missed my point. He wasn't banging 40 goals a season from day one. His goals followed an upward trajectory path like all strikers do.

When DCL is 27/28 at his "peak", he will be playing in League One.
