I've always assumed most footballers would avoid any media platforms where they might receive some feedback as the negative variety is almost inevitable, regardless of how well you play. Instead, they are probably surrounded by likeminded individuals and their own sycophants which makes them rather detached from reality. A bit damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I don’t think any player who turns out at Goodison is detached from the reality of fan opinions.

I suspect, as with everything surrounding Dominic Calvert-Lewin, personal opinions on who he is and how he chooses to live his life are clouding judgments.

I don’t see how him being fatigued could be controversial, but here we are.

I seem to recall Sterling saying something similar at an England training camp and getting pilloried for it.

In fairness, I think that rationalisation is exactly what keeps the hate flowing.

People think their words don’t matter, that they bounce off.

I'm sure nobody particularly enjoys having thousands of people shout abuse at them 90 minutes a week from the sides of a pitch, but they certainly aren't going on fans forums to see what strangers are saying about them. It's just a job to them at the end of the day. I don't kid myself they care about what the fans think.

Stop trying to find an argument for a player who has been unlucky with injury but ultimately will be critical to our survival

I would too if I was getting rushed back and asked to play 2 games in 3 days after a lengthy knee injury.

When you're not feeling 100%, you feel niggles and knocks more, so perhaps the fatigue is a by-product of that. Rushing him back would be naive.

For sure, if there was a forum with a thread about me, I wouldn’t go near it.

Spot on. You don't get to the top level of professional football and have a career in that world/bubble by giving two fuchs about what strangers on the interwebs say about you. (Especially when 99% of said strangers have probably never kicked a ball at anything more than Sunday league level).

I dont think people realise that the negative vibes do get through to the players.

Not so much on here, great place, not having a pop at the forum, but if your an Everton player and you look on here, then God help you.

But at the ground, as you say, I think a few people have got their knickers in twist cos he "wore a skirt" once.
