2022/23 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin and Patterson: we need in January a proper replacement for each. Neither Maupay nor Coleman are adequate for the rest of the season.

IMO Calvert-Lewin wont play again all season. Patterson will be out months...and a lad getting two major injuries after about 15 senior games in football doesn't make me think he'll be a long term option for us.

How much do you think it's DCL or Patterson's fault that they're injured, and how much is on the club?

I'm certain they'll look to bring in another option in January.

Let's see how many minutes he plays by then.

It feels like a defining few weeks for his career, and certainly for his career with us.

Is being "Injury-Prone" something that's accepted in Physiotherapy and Sports Science or it is just put down to pure bad luck?

If it's not accepted then a player like Gbamin would make a good test case, and C-L is causing even more concern.
Well sort of, I work in Spots Science and there has been some research in recent times that suggests that some athletes have a genetic issue due to collagen levels which makes them more susceptible to picking up injuries (There is a lot more to it than that as you can imagine but that is the abc of it basically)

We aren’t selling him ever because no one is buying a striker with his injury record. So we simply have to buy a striker to compete with Maupay and if Calvert-Lewin is unhappy about that then tough. It’s football and we’re in the business of getting results, not keeping highly paid fellas happy.

But we weren’t going to this Summer. If the club were as worried as you were they’d have paid that extra mill for a Brereton Diaz or rang up a Cavani or Diego Costa for short term help. Unless you think we were sat on a pot of gold to get a £30-40m replacement for Dom.

Keeping people happy is not our main problem. If a player is never fit to play then we should be planning for life without them. This is about winning football matches and moving the club forward. We don't owe any player any particular loyalty because the club has been underperforming for years.

I hope the lad gets fit asap and all these problems become a distant memory, but there is no certainty at all that will happen, and it would be naive to assume everything is just going to work out ok. The longer these issues continue, the less likely he comes back the same player as before.

Well people spoke last season like he was injured and never gonna play again. Low and behold he rocked up playing and scoring in pre-season games. Not sure that really helped people’s “he’ll never play again permanently injured” case when he played games.

He hasn't had any run of games in over a year. He will obviously play football but I have my doubts he will ever be able to play regularly again.

I dont know the proportions mate. But some players dont react well to repetitive action. All bodies are different and they can break down or withstand life as a pro footballer.

Maybe the training system needs looking at too as we do seem to suffer a lot of injuries. If players like Tarkowski start to break down we'll know it's the system for sure.

If the club believed Dom is permanently injured they’d have signed Maupay + a star striker + possibly tried to sell him.

They don’t so they didn’t, rightly so. When he comes back we can’t have him, star striker & Maupay in this formation and keep everyone happy.
Maupay isnt far behind Dom and offers much more off the ball
League games
Dom Games 164 goals 45 assists 11
Average 3.64 14.9
Maupay.games. 104 goals 27. Assists 7
Average. 3.85. 14.8

I don’t think anyone is suggesting he’s literally never going to play a game again and retire at 25. Andy Carroll is still “playing”.

But is unequivocally not as good or effective.
I can agree he’s maybe not as good or effective solely as a striker but in a team there’s more to a game than scoring goals admittedly we need goals so IF Dom was 100% fit and firing I’d have Dom but as it is I’d happily keep maupay in the team over Dom now, no guarantee we will get the Dom of 19/20 20/21 which also had more creativity in the team in them seasons. So to use unequivocally is preposterous we can all use big words have you ever got the countdown conundrum?
