2022/23 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

It may (a huge emphasis on may as it's purely conjecture / speculation) relate to what @micknick said and others have considered over time...

... his period out of the first team may not be related to a physical injury alone. He's been training for a while now, so his physical fitness may be quite strong now.

There'll be lots of people who'll dismiss this potentiality or respond to it with some crass remark, but mental health can play a huge impact on an individual.
You won’t get that from me .

it just felt unusual

Even if he needs to be carefully managed afterwards, I hope he's available on Thursday. It'd be a very quick turn around for him, but we're running out of chances to get a win.

He knows his game well enough now to play within himself and still be effective, and having a decent outlet up front makes such a difference.
5 days is plenty of time to recover physically...could have been worse and we could have had to play on Tuesday which would have been a problem and a risk. I wouldn't play him 90 minutes though in the next one bearing in mind we play another big one the following Monday.

Bergkampesque
He improves us so much all round, Centrebacks hate him and he creates space for others
Looking forward to Doucs making late runs with Doms hold up play and flick ons
Thats exactly what I thought when I saw it. I also thought with five or six games behind that gets buried, it would have walked the goal of the season awards too :(

Such an excellent point.

Dom himself touched on hIs mental health struggles last season.

Mental illness can be more debilitating than physical issues. It can even be life-threatening, as we saw with the legendary Gary Speed.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but I can’t get my head around that he hasn’t played for what over 2 months or whatever then he doesn’t return with 15 mins off the bench last week but effectively a full 90.

It’s not a dig at the lad or a conspiracy theory just feels a bit unusual

Dyche has said he wouldnt rush back Patterson or Garner. Hes also thrown in Simms and Holgate as sudden starters without any real time off the bench.

Hes said other managers have rushed DCL back and he wouldnt be doing that.

Plays him in a behind the scenes friendly a few days before starting and playing him 90mins.

Dyche is illogical.

Some people need to admit they were wrong and just welcome the lad back - hope Dyche giving him the time to get right proves a master stroke - he can really help us.
There was a game a home game last season where he was walking off after being subbed and roundly booed due to his Anichebe levels of half arsing it, that I'd thought he'd never play for us again, such was the voracity of the crowd. Then Palace last season aside, he's been utter gash every time he's been on the pitch.

That said, he does make the opposition play deeper and I do welcome him back and great to hear he's finally had an okay game - especially on a comeback game.

I don't agree with the posters saying 'we are down without him'. Not the DCL I've been watching for the past 20 months.

What he he tells the gutter press and how he manages the team behind the seems will be different. I am by no means a Dyche acolyte but I am prett6 sure we will not be privy to the conversations he is having with any of the players

A lot of people agree that probably the best spell of the season was a few weeks back where dyche finally found the "11" that went on that 5 game unchanged run and earned the points that has kept us in with a fighting chance. Without that run we'd be down.
The red card for Doucoure initially and then the injuries to Coleman and Onana saw a devastating decline in form and a predicted move back in to the bottom 3 where we're now adrift, via not too difficult games on paper.
Many people said that with that 11 back we stay up, without it we go down, and I agree.

So it's looking like we have that 11 back. Pickford, Coleman, Tawkowski, Keane Godfrey/Myko, Iwobi, Gana, Onana, Doucoure, Gray, Mcneil.

My question is does/should DCL start if that line up if they are all fit to play?
Should not that 11 be allowed to pick up from where they left off when they were doing so well?

Or do we play DCL, probably with Gray dropping to the bench for the starting 11? I'm betting that's a problem Dyche is now fighting with.

My worry is putting Lewin straight in means the dynamics of that team is now different, ie. concentrating on supplying a no 9 with service as opposed to getting on with their own games in the format Dyche set them up with for that run.

I'm honestly thinking we should use him as an impact sub for the coming games, much as we did with Simms if we needed to change.

I'd honestly like to see the 11 we did actually admire have a chance to get back together and find that magic again, tough one.

If DCL is fit then he needs to start, IMO.

Gray did what he could playing up top, but he has made Dyche’s decision easier by being terrible, or at best very unproductive, since he went back out wide.

Plus if we have to play Patterson, I’d rather Iwobi in front of him.
