While I agree that doing things legally is preferable, it is difficult for unskilled labor to get into this country legally.
The U.S. has bountiful resources to absorb more population. We have land, we have surpluses of food, we have natural resources and technical resources. There is no good reason not to allow for greater numbers of legal immigration rather than engaging in hostile rhetoric that divides us as a nation and builds ill will towards us from the global community.
This is not a situation in which the U.S. citizens will suffer from a more streamlined and open immigration policy. At least not if it is well worked and we can keep immigrants from being just as poor, disenfranchised, and disillusioned as they were at home.
We as a nation cannot afford to become more insular than we already are. The national identity has a real problem with arrogance and respect. It is hurting this country to treat other nations as inferior. It only follows that continuing to put up walls against the rest of the world will simply exacerbate those problems and lead to more issues in the future.
