Donovan loan move, the marketing opportunites of Everton in America?

Not necessarily. There's buzz going around that Landon only signed that new lucrative contract because there's a buyout clause. Basically it is a win-win for him because if he doesn't impress at Everton, he goes back to LA with a nice deal, or if he does play well he gets to fulfill his dream of playing in one of the biggest league.

What will not happen is what happened with Beckham. If Donovan is bought, it will be before MLS starts up again in March. This will allow Los Angeles to replace him with some other players. The Beckham fiasco went down because Beckham insisted on extending the loan throughout the MLS season while Milan had no intention of offering a reasonable price for him, so LA went the first half of their season without their highest paid player. It's not necessarily losing Donovan that MLS/LA want to avoid, it's the situation of him missing a large part of the year and leaving a gigantic hole in LA's salary cap. Donovan has said that he wouldn't do this to Los Angeles, and didn't push for an extension last year at Munich even when that would have meant more playing time for him.

So yeah, I think you guys have a decent shot at signing him if he performs well.

I agree with much of this, but not the timing. La already know that beckham isn't coming back until after the world cup. They want donovan for the start of the season in march.

I wouldn't be surprised if this speculated buyout provision for donovan doesn't kickin until the summer. So if everton want to buy donovan they may have to send him back in march and get him full time in the summer.

In interviews and everything I've heard from Beckham, he's stated he's going to finish his last two years with the Galaxy (after the World Cup and for next season). The only reason he's going to Milan is to be in the England roster and that won't be an issue after South Africa.

I think Donovan moving to MLS is going to be all about money. One factor could be how well Everton does in the Europa League because they could bring in extra revenue from that which could help alleviate the cost of buying Donovan.

Does anyone have any recent numbers of players that went for about the same in the transfer market? (somewhere between 6-8 million pounds)

If he does well clubs will be interested in him and he'll have offers from clubs. The biggest offer he'll jump ship and move.

We wont be the ones that will sign him though.

Hi all, I've been lurking for a month but thought I'd chime in.

LA acquired Clint Mathis yesterday, likely as cover for Beckham but he could really be cover for either, he's more of an attacking mid or 2nd striker like Donovan. I think it's entirely possible that Donovan could be gone if his valuation/buyout is met.

On fox football fone-in almost all of callers just call in to talk about the "big 4" and maybe once a month they'd get an Everton fan calling in. However on Monday the majority of the callers called in to talk about Donovan and Everton. Its a very big deal here for footie fans in America and if effective he could bring along of fans from the states.

I've said before there are hardly any everton fans but also I haven't anybody who's ever disliked Everton. They just need a reason to really root for Everton.

That being said unless there is a clause in Donovan's contract that he can asked to be sold and the MLS has to oblige if the money is decent then the MLS would never sell him. Now with Beckham a part time Galaxy player he's MLS's poster boy and they won't want to get rid of him especially with the WC coming which is the only time that millions will turn into a footie match.

Plus I think he still likes living in LA and doesn't want to leave the area.

First thing I thought of when I saw Mathis reunited with Arena.

Oh, and welcome to GOT. Your input is appreciated. (y)

Yes but given that Mathis is probably only going to make what 50K, 80K? 100K?/year he could just be cover when Donovan is on international duty. He didn't even start on Real Salt Lake.

I still think the best case senario is that we could find a way to keep Donovan for 2-3 years from Jan-May.

Maybe we could make it an annual thing?

No, he's only coming to boost his fitness ahead of the WC.

Well if they done a tiny bit of research they would soon realise everton are not a below average club:@

Agreed, Agreed, please don't misunderstand me. I'm blue through and though and know us as "best of the rest" and am dying for us to crack that top 4 again.

However, when americans do a little research, they will see that we are still bottom half of the table. While we are only a point or two from top half, americans don't understand the point system or anything like that. They will just see that we are bottom half (aka below average).

Mathis was on $115k/year.

MLS Players Union :: Player Salary Information

He could be cover in case Donovan gets bought after this loan but I don't see anything permanent happening until the summer time. I'm hoping Donovan performs well and Everton picks up some more fans in Seattle to come watch the games at the pub with me and a few others.

That's very big wages for an under developed sport in America. Are the Americans starting to take football seriously now?
Will it ever reach the heights of Europe?

You have to remember the USA is a huge country. It's well more than double the size of western Europe. If soccer became massively popular in a region of the US it would be a big deal. With 300+ million people the potential for growth is huge. The problem is obviously competition in the form of the NFL, NASCAR, MLB, NBA, NHL, UFC, Boxing and other minor league sports. All of which compete for the leisure sports time of viewers.

The good news is with so many people in the US there is still room for another popular pro sport. There are plenty of untapped markets which have no pro sports option. Beyond that, the MLS (major league soccer) has grown steadily over the years. The surprising part is that some of that growth has been in markets with competing established professional sports. A perfect example is Seattle with the Seattle Sounders MLS expansion team. Seattle has an established NFL and MLB team yet the Seattle Sounders have enjoyed success beyond all expectations.

Moving forward I think the league needs to focus on the strength of soccer (football). Speaking from a personal point of view I will outline what brought me to football.

1. Genuine international flavor both from a patriotic and competitive standpoint. More players and more teams equals a higher level of competition. The top teams are truly top teams. This is the initial draw for many fans in the US and why we all begin supporting the US national team and players. The international flavor is new and we all love to see nation vs nation in sports.
2. Games on TV without commercial interruption every 2 minutes. I honestly cannot watch a NBA, MLB or NFL game anymore. It's truly pathetic.
3. Goals are HARD to score. Some unrefined sports fans may say this leads to boring results of 1-0 or 2-1. I say NONSENSE. When goals are so hard to score it makes every attempt or defense of goal that much more exciting. I recall watching the US defend a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the Confederations Cup final. We went defensive the second half and Brazil went terrifyingly offensive. They simply outplayed us. Every shot Brazil took at goal was nerve racking. I couldn't take it. It was the very definition of intense. You simply don't get that for 45 minutes in any other sport.
4. It's simply a better game. Do I really need to expand on this at all? Seriously, you don't need to weight 220 pounds minimum to play. I see small and large succeed. We have multiple top divisions around the world. We enjoy world wide transfer periods. I could go on and on.

If the powers that be in the USA market the strengths of the game it will continue to grow.

For those of you thinking ESPN doesn't really care, just wait. They bought up Setanta's contract and are now showing EPL games (in HD). This is the run up to the world cup. EPSN is going to do EVERYTHING in it's power to play up soccer and Donovan and even the EPL over the remainder of the season... it is in their own best interest.

Today I had the Stoke V L'pool game on (ESPN HD) and sure enough, after the game there was conversation about Donovan by the announcers followed by a 5 minute piece focusing on Donovan and "pressure". Proves my point, ESPN wants this to be a success and they will promote this over here.

Take a moment to think about that too. After a 1-1 tie with the [Poor language removed] and stoke, the vast majority of the conversation wasn't about Torres, or Gerrard, or Beneyoun, or Benitez - it was about EVERTON and DONOVAN since that is the bigger story here. I loved it. Blues trumping Reds, even after thier own game.

Did you misread my post or are you being sarcastic?

He's on $115k per year.

That's £1.36k a week. Not a bad wage but pretty low for a professional athlete. Where would that put him in the English leagues? Average League One player's wage?

The salary cap for an entire team in the MLS is about $4 million / year (not counting all of a 'designated' player's salary) which is £47k / week. The MLS is building and growing but it has a ways to go yet.

Well that's probably enough off topic for now.
