I think downing is an excellent player and is going to be one of the best players isn the country over the next ten years. i havent gone mad and ive seen him put in some crap displayes but hes still very young and young players are always inconsistent. when hes [Poor language removed] hot hes [Poor language removed] hot, some good coaching is all this lad needs. Do i think we should get him if we have the oppurtunity? Yes. Do i think we will get him? No.

I beleive we would be gazumped either by Man U or Spurs.

It is encourageing though being linked with a player whos ability would make a stark difference to our squad.

I don't see the point of signing a wide player to deliver crosses into the box. It goes against the way we played pretty much all of last season. AJ is hopeless in the air so why go the arial route? Both Arteta and Osman/Fernandes liked to cut inside and play balls to feet and that's the kind of wide player we should be looking to sign. With Neville and Valente we'll have two full backs who are reasonable enough in attack so they can overlap and provide the width if needs be.

Downing is reasonable but he'll be overpriced and simply isn't the type of player we need. Now if Moyes could find a Rosicky/Hleb type player then that would be ideal.

I agree Bruce that Downing wouldnt fit in with the way we played last season, but for me that is the point. we need a squad so we can play different systems, tactics, and game plans. With Playing the system consistently it wont take teams loang to identify Arteta as our play makes and how to stop A.J. arguably this was seen at times last season. The key word is varience and i beleive when things arnet happening for us with a compact midfeild (essentialy playing versitile central midfielders in wide positions cutting inside or a five man) we need to have the option of another route for me that is width and wingers. Also we have three other forwards with great height and strapping centre halfs who are well able to score from crosses, not to mention supper Tim.

Drenthe, LB, LM and FW. Cheaper, more hardworking, more creative more flair. Snap him up quick!

I heared you and Gaz chatting about this lad during the week am going to take a look at him over the weekend he plays for holland right mate?

Heard since Villa are sniffing around him.

Hungry, is he?

I'm just not sure it's a particular strength of ours. Of the 51 goals scored last season, just 9 were headers. I would much rather see an Arteta like player who can do more than just cross, hence why I'm not that keen on Barry either. Both he and Downing are very one-dimensional players.

I wonder how many were Timmy's before he got injured. The rest had to be Lescott, Yobo and if i rember correctly didnt Arteta getone with the oul spanish nut.

Personaly i would go down the convential winger route and wouldnt be disapointed if we got him but i can see better value in Buying both Richardson and Kightly in terms of value for money and in keeping within our sqaud profile.

I'll be watching too mate, from what I see in the game against portugal, he's quite impressive. I'm not sure if it's a one off game or not. Will keep tracking him from now on. Let me know your view on him will you?

He found the net against belgium!

By the way, Have I mentioned Drenthe yet;) , the best option around. And I don't say that lightly. Awesome work ethic, incredibly creative, Great tackler, rapid feet and pace, inch perfect placer of the ball, and has an end product. Not bad for someone who was essentially a left back at first, but as he gains experience, he has stepped up to a winger role, and a midfield role. Now he can provide effective roles anywhere up the centre of the pitch, and everywhere on the left. Now that is versatility. (y) (y) (y) (y)
