Confirmed Signing Dwight McNeil

His 'stats' are what they are, but a huge part of that is mitigated against it being Sean Dyche's Burnley.

'last season he was in the top one per cent of attacking midfielders in the league for interceptions and blocks'

Says it all.

Let's see.

If £15m ish, at 22, barely misses a game you'd hope he's money in the bank.

Won the ball back in the attacking 3rd more than any other player in the league.

It's the bit that you seem utterly convinced that you have more insight into this signing than our manager does that raises the eyebrow...
Who knows if it is a Lampard signing, or Thelwell, or Bill, or Moshiri.

One thing we do know is the club have made it an art form on how to waste money.

Let’s hope I’m wrong, and he becomes our biggest attacking threat.

I would imagine Richarlison was right up on there on that stat in the final third of the season. The things I think we were missing from Richarlison leaving were:
Set piece headers defending and attacking - hopefully Tarkowski
Work rate up top - hopefully McNeil based off that stat
15 goals and assists and a talismanic ability to get them when we really need them - hopefully Dele or maybe Gordon stepping up

Of course, it's the hope that kills us

The boy is still really young, has some good qualities, think he will prove a decent player for us.

I know it's Burnley and I know he didn't have the best season, but no complaints from me, I like the gamble.

Im into my stats as you know mate.

Interesting one I came across, no player won possession in the opponents half (final third) more than McNeil last season.

Throw in the Gueye rumour - looks pretty obvious we are gonna pressing from the front as a major thing this season.

Still interesting if we will do any business with Chelsea this season too.

Gray last season: six goals, five assists.

McNeil last season: zero goals, one assist.
Gray did what he has done all his career. Started brilliantly then, his form drops off. I don't look cat assists too much as they can be given for a one yard pass. I'm sure he will get plenty of game time. Especially with 5 subs this season.

McNeil created over 40 chances for Burnley, last season more than any Everton player. If you put a good pass or cross in it's not your fault if the striker misses or isn't awake to the situation.
This is about getting DCL scoring.

He never scores, so he'll fit right in with our midfield. He does create chances, but the guy he would have been creating them for has left, so unless we sign a forward or DCL gets his fitness back I'm not sure this solves our problem.

All this talk of stats, got me thinking about Pienaar. It was always considered that he didn't have the best stats but how many on here think that he was a bad signing for us, how many think that he wasn't an influential member of the team.

I think there is a tendency to get bogged down in stats without considering all factors. That fine pass to Baines, who crossed for Cahill to score. That run that took players away, creating space for another player to exploit, that piece of skill that led to the free kick that led to the goal. None of these can be captured in a simple 'goals/assists' stat. You would then have to go to every other stat possible to work out whether the player made a genuine impact in a season and even then they could be misleading without using them alongside the right stats.

Basically, just because he had poor simplified stats does not mean we should have swerved. I am hopeful that the scouts who have been watching him did a lot more than just give stats but an overall opinion on how he played in a team, the opinion of how he could play in a team, then you look at attitude (which can never be shown in a stat).

Pienaar's stats in the Premier League as a reference:
Games: 212
Goals: 22
Assists: 39

Evertonians last couple of weeks ' No new faces apart from a freebie, really concerned, what is going on, we need players or we are down '

Evertonians after signing a decent young player ' He's crap him, this is taking the piss. Shocking player '

I seem to remember Richarlison having bang average stats for the watford side he was in before he joined us. He didn't exactly light the world on fire there, but came here and became not only a fan favourite, but the clubs best and most influential player. I also remember Pickford shipping a ton of goals in his season at Sunderland before moving here and as it turns out he almost single handedly saved us from relegation with his performances.

Stop looking at stats from their previous clubs...

McNeil is a young, decent enough player who is still progressing and isn't the finished product. I will reserve my judgement on a player until he has played at least a handful of games in the blue shirt.

Weird some of the comments here on this lad.
