All this talk of stats, got me thinking about Pienaar. It was always considered that he didn't have the best stats but how many on here think that he was a bad signing for us, how many think that he wasn't an influential member of the team.
I think there is a tendency to get bogged down in stats without considering all factors. That fine pass to Baines, who crossed for Cahill to score. That run that took players away, creating space for another player to exploit, that piece of skill that led to the free kick that led to the goal. None of these can be captured in a simple 'goals/assists' stat. You would then have to go to every other stat possible to work out whether the player made a genuine impact in a season and even then they could be misleading without using them alongside the right stats.
Basically, just because he had poor simplified stats does not mean we should have swerved. I am hopeful that the scouts who have been watching him did a lot more than just give stats but an overall opinion on how he played in a team, the opinion of how he could play in a team, then you look at attitude (which can never be shown in a stat).
