2024/25 Dwight McNeil

The challenge for Dwight is going to be in the games coming when teams identify him in the 10 role as a threat and start sitting on him a bit more.

The clever play then is making space for Illy.

I think also the challenge will be for Dyche and the club in managing his game time. We know he is a favourite of the manager but the way he is playing currently and contributing in terms of goals/assists, he will become indispensable sooner rather than later.

Managing McNeil's game time for Dyche has been "play him if he can even barely walk, sub him just about never" which is odd - he gets gassed towards the end of games and the sub in the usual 80+ min is very unlikely to rest him.

Anyway, hope he remains in the 10 as he's not a PL winger, ever, and seems to just fit better.

I'm on the fence on this - McNeil, to his credit, has quality on that left foot of his and being in the number 10 area means that when he can get it on his left foot facing goal, you can get more from him - great.

However, because he's the most one footed player in professional football, when he gets the ball with his back to goal, he has the turning circle of a cruise ship. He often ends up running back towards his own goal because he can't do anything on the right hand side of his body and if there's no room to turn onto his preferred foot, there's no plan B - it's infuriating to watch - so I'd say that by moving him inside you're accentuating his strengths a bit, but you're also accentuating his weaknesses - if we can reach the point where he and N'Diaye are able to interchange naturally, it might be the best solution

Seems to have hit a run of good form again. With Dwight, Dom and Ndiaye scoring, we’ll do better with Branth back in the side.

We have plenty of options now tbf, there is a few who can play in that 10 slot or even wide attacker.

In terms of teams working out Dwight we also have the options of rotating Illy & Dwight, then given the opposition a dilemma at the very least make them think in game - if we play Lindstrom on the left - that could be a three way rotation - even Jack has played centrally before.

Im also going to back Broja and go against the grain on here - hes going to surprise a few, similar to the way Ndiaye has.

Completely agree. Used to be loads of posts about how he used to just stroll around and hide in the big games. Not sure where this love-in is coming from. Had his moments but was definitely not good enough for us to be looking back fondly at his time here.
Not sure his work rate was ever questioned, just nowhere near good enough for that price tag walshy got bent over for.

The advantage he has and we saw it on sat is that he comforatble drifting to the left wing, especially as Ndiaye likes to cut inside. Its far harder for full backs to pick you up if you drift between the CB/FB space rather than appearing from a conventional winger position.
