ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 2

At fault twice in the same move...The first time by losing his man who ran off him. Secondly for not showing a natural defenders instinct to get back on the line and protect the goal once the keeper was stretched.
Ah yes, but don't forget he hit the woodwork (AKA "missed") at the other end twice. And he has scored once (against us unfortunately, but we won't dwell on that).

He may well go on to be a great great CH but he's nowhere near a Kompany, Ferdinand, Terry and so on.

The rush with the hyperbole is ridiculous.
I'm a longstanding fan of Van Dijk. However, he is a CB at the end of the day, and I always think he's liable to have a handful of costly off days at the back where he loses focus on set pieces or gets caught out of position. The truly great CBs love defending. It's all they feel the need to do. I get the feeling that Van Dijk gets caught between two stools sometimes with his attacking instinct (not just contributing to set pieces, as per Terry, Kompany etc), and that isn't the best attitude for a player so obvioulsy tasked with organising his own team's defence.

The way Liverpool are set up right now to stay solid means he has to curb his attacking instincts. Last night was a surprise and maybe a calculated gamble to push him forward that almost came off. But Arsenal's attack had Liverpool on the ropes last night and should have capitalised, and I dont think there's any coincidence. He's the bedrock Liverpool are built on but he's not as stable at his core job as he should be.

Danny Murphy won't be having that Dave, he believes Virjils the best defender in the world.

Admittedly, I think he's a good player too, but the coverage he gets individually is ridiculous and over and above his actual ability.

I like him, but I dont see him as a world class defender for the reason outlined. As said, top class defenders just love defending alone. They can distribute, yes. But they dont have any burning desire to desert their positions and be elsewhere. Van Dijk - for all the plaudits he got yesterday - looked like the S'ton period Van Dijk: an attacking player adapted to fit into a back four. A nominal CB. I bet Emery couldn't believe his luck yesterday that Klopp was allowing him to be so cavalier. Maybe he didn't and it was off his own bat he attacked so much. Regardless of that, it undermined the notion he's a top CB for me, despite MOTD trying to 'prove' he was both great in defence and attack.

They're beginning to look like a side that gets too many draws. That'll sort them out over a season. They're getting draws because the manager has gone for a conservative 'we hold what we have' style. That's way too conservative for this league. You wont get 90 odd points with that strategy, and that's what will be needed.
Jurgen Moyes?

Damned by that. Hahaha.

MOTD ignoring that Van Dijk allowed Lacazette to run off him for the goal and then didn’t get back to cover the goal line. 2 errors in the one move. He gave the pen against City (and could have conceded more that game), turned his back on Lamela’s shot vs Spurs, was all over the place against Chelsea Napoli and even the PSG game. He’s a good player but makes a lot of errors where he’s not even near the danger as he’s often just positionally out of it. For me Stones and Laporte have been far far better this season and I’d have the likes of Aldeweireld Vertonghen Kompany or Rudiger ahead of him too.
