Just an old fella thinking of ways to save money , household bills flying up. What are your tips ?.

My main one has been driving within the speed limit and not going over 2000 rpm. I drive an Astra van. Yes, it can be boring, but on average I'm saving about 15% to 20% in my costs.

The other big one is a packed lunch for work, I have always done it but Mrs B never did, a roll, fruit and a coffee she'd spend up to 10 euro a day.I have her on board now. You can buy in the supermarkets a weeks lunch for easily 20 Euro.take a jar of coffee into work, sorted.

I know , plenty fellas rolling their eyes at this thread but if I was to say the money saved by my frugal ways has paid for my trip to the Leicester City game. flights, hotel, ticket, food and drink.might stop and think.

Bit of a shocker though, a dishwasher is cheaper than washing stuff in a bowl according to Google wish I'd read that back in January !.

More tips anyone ?.

Y'know mate, I look at all that and think "all absolutely common sense, does it need to be said". Then I realise, yes, yes it does.

My folks grew up during and post ww2 and were thrifty (chuck in redusndancies in the 80s and they got super parsimonious). I've got mates whose parents were younger but much more prolfligate. Think folk have got used to plenty so just don't conserve.

Anyway, my tips are bulk by and store household stuff like washing up liquid etc if you can. Bigger outlay initially but often reduces overall cost. If you work in the public sector and live near a costco, sign up. The fuel is way cheaper than anywhere else and I've saved a lot above the membership fee. Not to mention saving stuff in the warehouse.

Otherwise, just think about if you need something. Just don't buy it if you don't.

Make long term investments in stuff that will keep your energy costs down. I've just bought shutter blinds for my house, a 3k investment but my house has never been warmer. Which should save me a fortune in heating over the years.

Suppose that makes sense, I didn't notice the difference in my last house when I got shutter blinds though.

Thermal curtains maybe?

One I can't work out, from my back window I can see in total about 10 yards but only 3 ever have washing out. Providing the other famies do actually wash cloths how are they drying them?
It's been a great summer with lots of sun and wind but only me and a few others ever use a washing line, are people actually using tumble driers these days?

Depends on the layout and which way the windows face, I believe? My entire flat is south-facing in all rooms, so heat is never a problem lol Blackout blinds are a must though, otherwise you die of heat stroke in the current 30-40C heatwaves.

Exactly this.
