I have just moved from a 1 year old new build to a 100 year old house. Great timing.

All of downstairs apart from the kitchen extension is suspended flooring so that is all getting ripped up and insulated. We are getting some cold walls insulated, entire house replastered, some new radiators and then possibly next year getting the entire outside re-rendered. Hoping all that will help heating wise.

A lot of work to be done mate.

How do you plan on insulating the suspended floor? And how deep does it go? Out of interest and if you want to share, of course! :)

If it makes a difference, then I'm in ;)
Understandable.

I've picked nearly every appliance we have to have a holiday or offline mode, to save power, to go with bulbs and stuff. Only problem is my computers but those have to run, sadly, but they don't rack up that much (judging by the difference in the bills).

Have any of you gone electric (or hybrid ?) for your cars as well?

It is mate. Thats just to help heating wise we are also ripping out and redoing the downstairs toilet, main bathroom and ensuite. Also all flooring upstairs is getting taken out and new floors laid. All new doors and frames throughout the house.

The builder that is working with us suggested a few options. He said to fill the space with concrete would cost way to much as its quite a big drop. He mentioned about using insulation blocks. We are waiting on him to cost everything and there will be a few options so not 100% sure on what we will choose yet.

Active commute. The average car journey in the UK is about 7 miles. That's easily doable on a bike and if you went there and back every day you'd easily save around £400 a year (more if your car isn't fuel efficient). Plus you get fit. Similarly, if you're driving to the shops or dropping your kids at school etc. consider if you can walk there. 56% of all car journeys are less than 5 miles so there are some pretty easy savings.

Think about taking shorter showers and also getting a thermos flask so you boil full kettles each time.

It blows my mind how many people use their car for about 5 mins down my street

Sometimes I'm still washing up when they return (and no, I don't have a dishwasher, because I'm not lazy)
