I've recently moved into a 1 bed apartment after living in a 3 bed semi-detached for the last 23 years, so I'll be interested to see how the energy costs compare. As it's on the 2nd floor of a 3 floor building, it only has 2 exterior walls with 3 windows, and obviously apartments above and below, it shouldn't need much heating in winter. I used to have a dishwasher that I only needed to use every 3rd day so can see that was probably more economical than washing dishes by hand 2 or 3 times a day. I now have a pre-pay meter for electricity so I'm keeping a close note of the daily cost.
Some of the claims I've seen in the press about how large people's energy bills have been before the expected rises makes me wonder if people have been cavalier with their energy usage before this, leaving lights and appliances switched on, doors and windows left open, heating set excessively high etc.

Stir-fry cooking... Chop you meat, veg and other ingredients in to small pieces. Heat your wok/pan to a high temperature with a small amount of oil, then quickly cook the ingredients. It takes 3-4 minutes to cook, and not much gas!

A programmable thermostat is a big help. We also have an electric plan where we don’t pay anything for electricity used between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am when there’s less load on the power grid. That’s when we stair step the thermostat down in the warmer months, and we do all the dishes and the laundry. If you can put off enough tasks until the free hours, it makes up for the higher daytime rate.

That is such an easy one isn't it. These are electric Ireland time bands.

A day may be split into 3 time-bands
  • Peak: 5pm - 7pm (the most expensive time)
  • Day: 8am - 5pm and 7pm - 11pm (with prices similar to the flat tariff)
  • Night: 11pm - 8am (the cheapest time)

A lot of people think log burners/open fires would be a cheaper source of heat - not if you're buying logs.

Moved to a house that doesn't have gas last year and miss it.
A stove burner is very economical if it heats your not water or even better heats radiators - the back boiler We have is a 16 inch double wrap around Dunsley back boiler still made in Holmfirth Yorkshire for a open /Log fire .- We had it fitted in 1987 it heats the water plus 8 radiators it is gravity fed forget upstairs, or we can use a pump to put on to beat downstairs - very economical -

When I worked in the horticultural industry my perk was free wood - perk of the job - Ash was the best logs to get mixed with a bit of coal - with the roaring open fire - the best in BTUs still is brilliant .....
Parts are still available ...... The best investment on my mortgage we ever made .....

Not the most practical though?

And the cost of wood has narrowed the economical gap. Here, what was £95 for a dumpy bag the other year is £155 now. It'll cost more to heat a kettle now with fire/wood than it would to use electric.

What do you use to heat water in the summer? If immersion/electric to heat a water tank then it'll average out as being worse than a gas boiler, IMO.

I moved house June 2021. The property I moved in had a Rayburn for hot water and heating - it absolutely devoured Oil. It broke/while replacing it with a system boiler, I had last winter having to use immersion for a water tank, the cost was insane compared to what I was using for gas boiler a few months before. That's why I miss gas - it's a lot cheaper than oil, and massively cheaper than electric for heat+heating water.
