England v Australia - THE ASHES

I can still picture the disgusted look on Gooch's face in Oz in about 1990 as non-striker when Gower was batting in the over before lunch and swung Merv Hughes (I think it was) down to be caught on the long-leg boundary.

lol my God he would frustrate a captain wouldn't he? That's why I still say let these types of players play as they do, McCullum etc, because when they come off they win the game for you.

An alltime aus side just past its peak and an all time great England team coming into its peak ... what a series.

The aussies miss a true leader like ponting. As much as I dislike him he was a great leader.

You reckon? The only Aussie captain to lose the Ashes not twice but 3 times I think?

My opinion is that he was one of the best batsmen of all time, but inherited a team of all stars that made him look better than he was, and as they retired his frailties were shown up. Easy to captain a side with McGrath and Warne in the team :)

Steve Waugh was the leader, the inspiration, for mine.

Warner wouldn't, Langer and Hayden were the classiest opening pair of the decade. Johnson was a backup back then for Kasprovic, I'd take Johnson over him now though. I'd take Smith over Damien Martyn, other than that, no body. In saying that, in the current team I'd only swap Anderson for Hoggard, both teams are poor in comparison to that series, the best test series I've ever seen.
Root over Bell, whichever version, its getting confusing now! But my main point is this aussie team isn't something we should fear, they are decent, with a very good coach/captain combo, but hugely beatable. We made them look better than they were last time out and they went on a bit of a run after, but we should absolutely be gunning for them here, they aren't titans of the game. I just don't see the fuss over Smith, I see a man who has been in great form, but that will come back, he's not a Lara or even a Ponting, hell, I'd take Kane Williamson over him

Fair point. He got one hell of a team to captain didnt he!

Absolutely, learning to take the rough with the smooth is a fine art on the part of the onlooker. File under Deulofeu 2015/16.

Kane Williamson should be a starter in any country's eleven in my unbiased opinion, this kid will be NZ's greatest ever player at the end of his career. I do like Smith though, he's a battler, reminds me again of Waugh and Border in his approach even if the technique is different, he will graft and fight.

Totally agree about chasing them and pushing them hard, you know they're in trouble when they're trying to put off Ben Stokes when he came out to bat, he's the most unarsed player in the team lol

England have produced some shockers down the years at Lords not least last year's happy hooking capitulation vs. india.

I cant see it!

We never perform that well at Lords, Hazelwood to get wickets, Clarke to score his Lords ton, that's how I'm seeing it at a very early stage without looking at the wicket (which is always boring at Lords) and the weather forecast.

The loss of Starc will be massive for them though if he can't recover.
