Euro 2021 - The Stadiums

Poland and Ukraine still redid just about every stadium.

If people want and can renew their stadiums then what's the problem? If the associations can help provide funds then it might be beneficial for the clubs involved, however a lot of stadiums have already been renovated and I think we may have passed that stage where the host countries are expected to have all brand new stadia.

The problem is building a renovated 50k+ seat stadium that after the tournament will be filled once every 5 years at best is a poor use of public money.

We have not passed that stage yet. Qatar is next year in all new stadiums.

Qatar have been building them since God knows way back when they first bribed - I mean won the bid. The USA are likely to get an upcoming WC and they won't need any new stadiums and I can see an established European country or joint bid relying on mostly existing grounds too being either before or after the American tournament.

Covid will have taken a toll on the coffers and I can see and in fairness had already started to see people turning their noses at the Olympics due to the expense. Organisers might have to get used to not having shiny new everything in future.

Yes the US won't need stadiums but they're in the fairly unique position of selling out 70k stadiums every week already.

My guess is the only countries that can host it with what they have (excluding Brazil for example as they've built all they need for one recently) are the US, England, Germany, Spain, Australia and maybe Canada. It's a big ask.

I would add Italy to the list, sure most are fairly old but like I say I think gone are the days where everyone wants to throw their hat in the ring and spend billions on it.

China probably could, Russia, Japan & South Korea, France and South Africa all held world cups in the not so distant past. Those along with your's is more than enough hosts to go around until the economics change and it becomes cool again to have these showpiece events with the massive coats attached.

The US have already got the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada. The US have got the vast majority of the games though including the quarters, semis and final.

Obviously the situation is evolving daily at this point, but what is the current plan for spectators in the later rounds at Wembley? I know the reopening roadmap originally called for the end of all social distancing restrictions in late June, but surely that’s not going to apply to sporting events, right? Seems like a big leap to go from 10k or whatever they allowed at the FA Cup final all the way up to a full house.

At the moment, it’s still potentially set for 45,000, which creates all sorts of issues.

There has actually also been talk of 90,000 for the semis and final - which was revealed about 48 hours after people had their tickets refunded.

But there’s talk of the 21 June being extended into July, so I can’t see a scenario where more than 45,000 are allowed in, I could even see 22,500 yet.

Even more confusing , is they cancelled everyone’s tickets for the R16, which was moved to Wembley (group winners of England’s group) and still haven’t put them on sale

Only UEFA.

Australia would need to expand quite a few stadia if they were to host it, outside the 5 major cities they are all too small

How many do they have total that would work?

I was just thinking that they could do it not that it would necessarily be ideal.

Currently I would say 6 stadia would be suitable, about half a dozen others are in the 20 - 25000 range so could be expanded without too much drama. We did bid for next years world cup, so it would be possible.

Oh, and most of them are afl/cricket grounds, so fans would be miles away from the action

Yes the shape of the grounds is a unique issue.

USA/Mexico/Canada are up in 2026 with basically all the stadiums needing nothing more than a top of the line pitch installed to be up to standard.

FIFA aren’t supposed to award the 2030 WC for another 2-3 years. The official bidding process hasn’t even started yet. If they are only giving the host nation a six year lead-in to get ready, you’d have to think that one is going to a country (countries) that already have most of the infrastructure in place. Qatar needed a decade plus to scratch-build their stadiums using slave labor and no safety regulations. Nobody is doing it in six.

My guess is 2030 to South America which probably means Argentina and another country or two upgrading stadiums significantly. And to some extent it is fine. River, Racing and Boca all have stadiums that sell lots of tickets. But building a 60000 seater at great cost for a club that sells 15k tickets usually isn't on for me. That's the part that needs to go.
