Europa Conference League

Mate, I’m 28 and I’ve never seen us win a trophy.

If you’re telling me in 18 months time I’m in Macedonia watching us lift a European trophy, I’m snapping your hand off.
I understand, even though we did win one when you were 3, I understand. But the whole point of a trophy is the achievement. If you want a ttrophy why not go buy one at a sports shop and engrave everton on it? Wouldn't be the same would it. Neither would a Mickey mouse european cup.

If you want gravitas, kudos, importance, interest, history - wait for the league or FA cup, as its unlikely european competition will ever be interesting or important - not in my eyes at least, until it reverts to knockout.

man, how ridiculously complicated have they made european competition?
Maybe just league champions play in the champions league.
a few runners up spots in the Europa league
and bring back the ECWC.

Instead you have the team that finishes 4th in the domestic league going in to the champions league but losing and playing third in a Europa league unless their country co-efficient is above 4 then you play second place Europa conference but not on Tuesdays where the league runners up from the season before play the league winners from next season to partake in the 2027 Champions league third place playoff.
The more you complicate rules, the more you can manipulate without people knowing.

So is is there another European cup up for grabs?
Doesn’t really matter to Everton. If it’s any good they’ll find some rule to keep us out of it. I’m old enough to remember the Inter Cities Fairs Cup which had a one city one team rule so when we finished higher than Stoke or Coventry they got the place at our expense. Football seems to have two rules that involve Everton:-
1 Everton must always be disadvantaged.
2 if they ever are advantaged in any way then Rule 1 takes precedence

I wouldn’t turn my nose up at this at all, it’s European games, good experience for the players, great trips for the fans, and a chance at a trophy we desperately need.
That’s assuming a) fans are back in grounds and b) travel restrictions are removed.
I wouldn’t bet on either at the moment.

Yeah, come on mate, that’s pedantic for the sake of pedantic there.

Going into a ground and hearing the full time whistle blow, with thousands of blues in jubilation, that’s what I want.

It’s all well and good saying sports direct engraving trophy, but grew up listening to my Grandad and Dad telling me about Sheffield Wednesday in 66, 1970 near miss with Panathinaikos, the best team of the 80s and Rotterdam.

I want to be able to tell my kids and grandkids about us winning trophies, and therefore I won’t turn my nose up at any trophy.

Plus European experience can only help our players grow and expand our reputation to attract better players.

Plus would be nice to have one last trophy paraded round goodison, right?

Just no. I think youre understandably getting desperate- but I wouldnt want a trophy that is effectively a participator certificate. Fans of other clubs would be laughing at us if we celebrated that.

Emperor's new clothes mate.

I’m with you on this, I couldn’t careless if it was called the Mickey Mouse cup as long as we won it lol

Wenger said several months ago that in the near future domestic competitions would be played exclusively midweek and European competitions would occupy the weekend slots.
This new competition , by increasing the breadth of involvement among clubs, is a step in that direction.

It's the quality of competition that would take the sheen off winning it.

Even the fact of the 3rd placed teams in the group stages of the Champions League entering the Europa League raised the standard a little, and there are already some very decent teams there.

This is the third tier competition and it seems specifically designed to facilitate teams from weaker nations playing in the more advanced stages of a European competition. It looks like 7 or 8 half decent sides from reputable leagues in amongst 32 teams at the group stage.

The prize money is probably peanuts. Let's say we were in this and drawn in the group stage against teams from Finland, Albania, and Bosnia. What good is that to us in raising the standard in the long run? We'd end up sending the reserves.

People say it's a European trophy but it's one with massively reduced prestige. It's made for Channel 5 or Quest or ITV 4 this. It's like celebrating winning the League cup if the top six didn't enter. It won't matter to the elite clubs because they can still win the LC and qualify for the Champions League by other means, or the Europa League in a disastrous year. It stinks of another stich-up to ensure nobody can gatecrash that group.
