Everton 2012/13 season

With the imminent return of Premier League football (gulp) I thought I'd reintegrate myself into the world of Everton by watching the season review from 2012/13, and seeing how much had changed in the intervening 10 years

I think at the time we thought we were a well organised, workmanlike team that operated within a financial structure that stopped us progressing further up the table. We didn't really have any superstars, but everybody knew their roles and competed on a largely consistent basis.

Watching them tonight - we were actually a really excellent side with underrated quality in most areas (and even with some squad depth) - Watching Fellaini, Baines , Coleman, Mirallas, Jagielka in their prime showed just how savvy we were in the transfer market. The really surprising thing though was just how effective our 'fringe' players were - Jelavic, Osman, Anichebe, Naismith all weighing in with goals and making us look a really dangerous attacking unit

It's probably made me realise just how terrible this current side is - even the players we consider to be our best are not a patch on this crop from a decade ago. We seem to sneer at people like Fellaini in retrospect, but somebody like Onana isn't fit to lace his boots. Even lads we consider 'failures' back from that era like Naismith and Anichebe are miles ahead of what we currently have.

Has football really changed so much over the past decade? I'd really urge some of our supporters to go back and watch some of the Moyes teams just to see how much we're being short-changed with this current lot

We will never have that again if we keep changing managers every 18 months.

Go and watch the 2003/04 season next.

The standard of the premier league back then was awful to be fair. It’s far more ruthless now with most of the 20 clubs spending big money.

Its all about how you spend that money. Back then we spent it well. Back now we spend it not very well.

A solid team with a good manager. My overriding memory of that season is choking to Wigan in the quarter finals at home then playing Man City who where champions at the time, off the park and beating them with 10 men a week later,
Always used to go to City and win aswell, went about 4/5 years on the spin and think we won them all

Opposition always knew they were getting a tough game playing against that Everton side, state of it now

….we just want to watch a team that create and provide threat even against the top teams. Add in defending well & it’s not asking a lot for supporters to enjoy watching their team.

I think give Onana a chance. He is very inexperienced. Otherwise interesting analysis.

you dont finish top 6/7 most seasons on a shoestring budget unless you have a quality manager (moyes) and quality players

the 3-3 game against liverpool was immense

I’d say you could argue Moyes shares similarities with Southgate to be honest.

Gets the best out of players, but when it comes to the big event, let’s himself down by being too negative.

25+ years as a manager now, and he’s not won a trophy. He should have.

Wonder if he ever regrets leaving?
