Everton and Arsenal A Tale Of Two Clubs

I think these two clubs (well at least one of them used to anyway!) share a lot of similarities. Both have or had iconic former stadiums in Goodison and Highbury. There's the Alan Ball and Joe Mercer connection as well. At their best these two clubs are renowned for playing attractive and stylish football. After we won that 1995 FA Cup this was the honours list of both clubs.

Everton 9 League Titles, Arsenal 10 League Titles, Everton 5 FA Cups, Arsenal 6 FA Cups, Everton 0 League Cups, Arsenal 2 League Cups, Everton 1 European Cup Winner Cup, Arsenal 1 European Cup Winners Cup and 1 Fairs Cup.

There wasn't a lot between the two clubs there, although Arsenal just about shade it. In the past twenty seven going on twenty eight years though, Arsenal have added 3 league titles and 8 FA Cups to their grand total, which now gives them a total of 13 league titles and 14 FA Cups. Arsenal in that period of time played in a Champions League final and two Europa league finals as well.

So where did it all go so wrong? Well a year later in 1996 they appointed Arsene Wenger as manager, and he completely transformed the club with his revolutionary approach to training, and signing players like Patrick Vierra and Thierry Henry etc.

Meanwhile Everton appointed the late and great Howard Kendall for a third spell as manager. We gave Howard no money to spend, and whilst Arsenal were signing the players they were signing, we were bringing in the likes of John Spencer and Mitch Ward.

This all boils down to the people running both of these respective clubs. Arsenal had a revolutionary and a man with a vision in David Dein running the show, whilst Everton had incompetent con artists like Peter Johnson and Bill Kenwright running the club into the ground.

Arsenal are looking good for a a 14th league title this season, while Everton sadly are staring down the barrel of relegation from the Premier League yet again. The fortunes of both of these clubs in the past nearly thirty or so years, serves as an indictment on the custodians of this once great club.

They will blow it but lego head has done a good job getting rid of the bad apples at that club
It's not so much about this season, it's about the respective paths both ourselves and the Gunners have gone down since 1995/1996.

They became a club of relevance in the Premier League era, whilst Everton on the other hand were and indeed still are the complete opposite sadly.

Arsenal thread on here? Who gives a flying.....toss about Arsenal? Sorry.
He's raising a valid point though.

Arsenal are a Giant in European and World Football (granted they still don't have a European Cup) and in 1995/96 time we were on a very similar level to them as a club.

The trajectories of the two clubs has gone the opposite way and now there is a gulf between the 2 clubs.

The thing that helped them was they were in London (a big attraction to foreigners back then) and were not in decline when Wenger went there in 96.We had just had 2 relegation battles in 93/94 and 94/95 plus Peter Johnson was only interested in taking money out of our club whilst David Dein was a man with a vision for Arsenal,s future.
