Everton and Arsenal A Tale Of Two Clubs

When football really became about money we didn't stand a chance. If we alter the landscape and put the PL boom to 1984 or even better our successful period to the mid 90s or afterwards, then we would have the big nike contracts, the global fan base, the blue chip sponsors.

Other teams would then have been playing catch up with us. It still would have been easier for Arsenal to given London prices and media bias but it would have given us a chance to keep up or even ahead. We were just 10 years too early with our rise. Everton that.

The thing is though we could easily have finished third under Colin Harvey in 1990, maybe if we stuck with him he might have turned things around.

The game was even moving on when we brought Howard back in 1990. He was and will continue to be for a long time yet the greatest manager in our history, but whatever about 1990 he definitely should not have accepted the job in 1997. It would have been awful for him if we went down that season.
We were in prime position to finish 3rd with about 3 games left but botched that up and came 6th, which was disappointing. I felt sorry for Colin, his career proved he was an outstanding coach (but not a great manager). He had it even harder as there seemed to be divisons in the camp with the new singings and the old guard, who regarded the new lads as inferior to their replacements and didn't fit in because they didn't want to get hammered on the ale three times a week.

In terms of Everton/Arsenal- growing up as a fan in the 80s, as one of the Big 5, i always felt Us (and Spurs) were the Jnr partners in that '5' and the other three were bigger clubs- and those 3 were always going to benefit the most from the sky era- although luckily the RS recruited Souness, so things didn't work out very well for them. lol

The demise of the rs as a force in the early 90's was a wonderful thing.

For all the relative success that lot have enjoyed post their 1990 league title, they were never the same club (one league title in the last thirty three years is proof of that) by the time Souness was finished with them. I do think that 1987/1988 was when we last saw a great rs side thankfully!

The rot started in summer 1987 when you think about it. Howard went off to Spain, and they were signing the players that we should have been signing, to take them to another level.
