Everton FC - Finances

Gregg sold Apollo Leisure to the Americans for £130 million, so he had the money. He never had any interest in football, but he does like making money, so he offered to lend the money to the club. However, it's all smoke and mirrors, as Liverpool City Council had no intention of letting Everton have the Kings Dock site. And considering how well the arena and conference centre have done it has worked much better for the city this way.

Meanwhile, Everton need a new Managing Director, a new Commercial Director, and a new Director of Communications. They would be much better spending millions on these 3 positions than on buying a new player or two.

Great post and thanks for the facts.

Yeah I got told that myself by someone who worked high up for LCC at the time, never really knew what to make of it though given the fact it that the council had tried to convince the RS to take up the ground.

Do you think if that is actually the case people can stop blaming Kenwright for the failure to deliver that stadium?

Its only hearsay though. Why didn't Kenwright come out and tell the fans if that was the case. Would have been accepted as a genuine reason for not getting Kings Dock. Why hasn't he?

Strange that there was no mention of that at the time, nor any links whatsoever then/since to document that assertion. Absolutely not credible that the Kenwright PR machine would have taken the blame for the failure (due to lack of funds) when the Council could be blamed.
To be fair mate this is rewriting history.

Spot-on. It (KD) was about kenwright relinquishing control. No more. No less.

Strange though, because when DK came about, I remember billox said something along the lines of: "There is nowhere else - we've looked"

Didn't even attempt to try Stanley Park though. Even though he said they had.

There was nowhere else - and nobody else to wrest control from him, then.

Do you think LCC was ever going to say publicly that they would have let Liverpool have the site but not Everton? It was a terrible site for a ground due to the lack of transport links, it's hard enough getting 9,000 people there for a concert. But if Liverpool had wanted the site, and threatened to go to Knowsley or another Borough, the loss of tourist money would have forced LCC's hand. This way they have kept both clubs and got a new Arena and Convention Centres.

When you start to get involved with the muck and mire that is local politics, then transparency and honesty are pretty much non-existent.

I know little of this actual situation so I am just speculating, but I expect that if you start to 'blame' politicians it may have other consequences.

Could it jeopardise other projects and the clubs vested interests? Produce undue pressure on the club? Damaged our credibility?

The whole idea that the Council were unwilling to give the land may be wholeheartedly untrue, or it may be based on some actual truth.

The problem is that I doubt the club (or specific parties) would have disclosed this either way. It would have been dealt with behind closed doors.

Let's not forget that there is very little transparency and communication either from the Council or the Club generally. This would be no different.

But like you say its all speculation....it cannot be stated as fact unless we see the fact. Until then it does not carry any weight whatsoever.
I don't know a lot about the Kings Dock but at the time it was reported we needed x amount of money by a certain date and it never materialised therefore we lost the opportunity. Apparently Gregg came up with a solution but BK was not happy with it and ended up ousting Gregg.

Then kenwright's a liar - because it was him told us the money for that scheme was 'ring fenced'. You don't make public statements like that unless the plan has credibility...............unless you're bill kenwright; who has very little credibility.

And he wonders why he's the subject of the ire of Evertonians far & wide?

He signs off the cheques. He fronts the club. He puts himself up to be shot at. He blunders his way through every failed venture. So I've no sympathy for him.

Lads, lots of chat that belongs in the Board thread.

Let's try and keep this to a discussion of the finances not the people responsible for them.

Thanks
