Everton January 2022 Transfer Thread

Mad that both him and Thierry Small left for nothing because they didn't see a clear enough pathway to first team football. Another absolutely damning verdict on Unsworth and his bunch of cronies looking after the academy.

Seems an oxymoronic post.

If players don't see opportunities in the first team that's not Unsworth/academy issue is it.

It's 100% on Unsworth and the academy mate. Baines' job title is literally 'Professional Development Coach', whilst Unsworth is the academy director. It's up to them to develop a pathway for the standout young players. Not sure who else you feel is responsible, certainly not the 16 year old kids.

Surely the biggest indicator of a pathway is academy players playing for the first team.

I wasn't aware Unsworth and Baines picked the side for the first team manager.

The manager isn’t going to pick them if they’re not good enough. It’s up the coaches to improve them as players.

Think you're being facetious here mate. The academy staff are there to develop these youngsters and chart a pathway to success for them, through pans of U23 football, loans or first-team involvement.

But Small has just left so if he's someone you're pissed left, then you're also assuming he is good enough to play, in which case it's the first team manager's problem yes?

These lads aren't getting to 16 and thinking "if I stay here I'll never get better at football" and then moving to bloody Angers for world class training are they.

It’s such a tricky age I suppose. Not many 16yr olds play in the prem, but our best ones should be in the 23’s. again apart from this season, where there has been a change.

Unsworth has had plenty of players over 21 in the team. So maybe a 16yr old can’t see a pathway, to even the 23’s. like I said with that changing and the team full of 17/18 year olds, the 2nd youngest in the league apparently.

A feeder club would come in handy, say in Holland’s 2nd division. Then 3 or 4 of our best can go there each season.

With 3 talented 15yr olds in the 18’s and Metcalfe who I think is 16. We need to make sure we don’t lose them. Apparently Unsworth is doing a grand job though, we’ve won 2 titles don’t forget.
Chelsea has sent something like 30 players on loan to Vitesse in Holland including the like of Mount, Atsu, Kalas, Van Aanholt, Matic, Kakuta, Traore, Solanke, Blackman and many more....

I dont think you can do this any longer due to Brexit, if I`m wrong I`m sure someone will soon set me straight. I`m not a fan of the U23 model, even locally the U23 teams are technical and they dont learn the physical side of the game like you used to in Reserve games or playing in lower leagues.

David Henen

The only rookie player we’ve signed young and been a relative success n recent times is Dom, and really speaking he was pushed far earlier than he was ready for by that numbnuts Koeman
The guy now kicking it around in the French second division… Are we upset that he wasn’t made a first teamer too?

If a 16 year old is seeing a clear pathway to the first team then the first team is clearly failing.
Unless they are a superstar then there should be at least 2/3 ahead of him.

A pathway doesn’t literally mean just walking into the first team at 16 you know. It could be a plan worked out to have them first team ready by 19/20, including a progression of loans/pre seasons playing and training with the first team. We have absolutely no record of providing such a progression for young players, so he was right to leave.

Also, yes, our first team is failing and we’re skint, our first team and only left back has been phoning it in for 2 years, so there should be a pathway for young players right?

Well we have Digne, we sent Nkounkou out, the pathway for Small was there, the first team faith to put him in the squad wasn't.

Livramento went from Chelsea to Saints this Summer too - do Chelsea fans blame Neil Bath (Head of Academy) for no pathway? No, they blame the managers for not using him.

To be fair he left before we loaned Nkounkou out, and he probably looked at Nkounkou last season not getting a game ahead of even Ben Godfrey and thought, what’s the point staying here. Probably had no faith in the youth coaches at Everton making him a better player at 19 than he currently is at 16.

Livramento left Chelsea because they’ve got Reece James who is going to be their right back for the next 10 years. He made the correct decision leaving there too.

If there is money to spend, I hope our Director of Football realises that before the transfer window actually opens. I mean, he could have 3 months to target players and get their signings lined up to play in 4-5 games during January. Obviously though if we do sign anybody they'll probably come in right on the deadline and only make a first appearance halfway through February. The Everton way.

Again, what's that got to do with Unsworth/academy blocking a pathway for these kids? This kid will not be worrying he won't be "turned" into a good player here vs Southampton. They just play more academy players because they're worse than us.
