This window will make all the difference. If we do sod all and therefore finish the window in a weaker state than when it started, then I expect the worst. Newcastle will no doubt throw their money about and improve, they already have, and now have an away win to their name. We need to get players in to midfield and make this window count. We are pretty much asking for relegation if we don’t.

Agree, genuinely feel if we can add 2 midfielders even on loan that 1) can project the back 4, run & press all day and 2) link the team in attack, carry the ball & score goals then we will pull away. We sit and do nothing, we are gone.

It needs to be something like that. Two central midfielders, not one. The thing is, if someone like Gueye becomes available, we’d have to rival a certain club from the North East for his signature, and I think they look more attractive than Everton right now. That’s how bad things have got.
Not really madness… Kessie, Kamara and Zakaria will have far more attractive suitors than us coming in for them than a 32 year old Idrissa Gueye who’s earning 6 figures a week.
He’d be a quick temporary fix but he’d instantly make our midfield stronger and won’t need that time to settle like the other 3 may do.
If it was the Summer and we had the time by all means go all out for the younger players whose value will appreciate and also have the time to improve as players but Gueye seems to be a far more likely and quicker deal.

But then look at the playing profiles.
What do Allan and Doucoure do? What does Gana do? All very similar.
The other three could comfortably sit as a defensive midfield anchor behind Allan and Doucoure to have the extra layer of protection.
Having 3 players haring around doesnt solve our problem.
Gueye is far more comfortable sitting in than the other two. Shown it in his last season here, he was a massive reason behind Digne having such a strong season as he would always cover that side and drop back to allow him to bomb forward. Doucoure and Allan don’t do that. Far, far better at retaining the ball than them too.
We do need to bring in two midfielders imo tho, I’d be very happy for Gueye to be one of them.
He would give us the legs in midfield to let Allan/Gomes do their jobs and Doucouré to get up the pitch.
