Everton have announced that billionaire Farhad Moshiri is to become "a new major shareholder" at the club and "brings the promise of new investment".

Moshiri will acquire 49.9 per cent of the Merseyside club, conditional on the Premier League approving his investment

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright said: "After an exhaustive search I believe we have found the perfect partner to take the club forward

"I have got to know Farhad well over the last 18 months and his football knowledge, financial wherewithal and true blue spirit have convinced me that he is the right man to support Everton."

Moshiri added: "I am delighted to take this opportunity to become a shareholder in Everton, with its rich heritage as one of Europe's leading football clubs.

"There has never been a more level playing field in the Premier League than now
Bill Kenwright has taught me what it means to be an Evertonian and I look forward with excitement to working with him to help deliver success for Everton in the future."

Earlier this month, Everton appeared to be moving towards a takeover after talks with American investors John Jay Moores and Charles Noell were understood to have made progress

Moores, the former owner of Major League Baseball franchise the San Diego Padres, and his associate had been in negotiations since December and undertook a six-week due diligence period looking at the club's books and speaking to major shareholders Kenwright, Robert Earl and Jon Woods

Everton had not commented on any of the takeover speculation but at the club's AGM in November chief executive Robert Elstone said: ''There has never been more people interested in investing in Everton and the chairman is confident [investment] will be secured in the near future.''

At the same meeting Elstone said the club's plans to move to a new £300million home in nearby Walton Hall Park were more dependent on securing partnership funding from the city council than they were on fresh outside income

''We are not working on the new stadium on the premise that we are about to secure new investment or need new investment,'' he said at the time

Everton’s new majority shareholder is Farhad Moshiri via Royal Blue Mersey

farhad-moshiri_416x416.0.0.jpg

Farhad Moshiri has been announced the new major shareholder at Goodison Park.

Former Arsenal shareholder Farhad Moshiri is set to buy Everton, reports The Telegraph.

Reports on Friday, from the Daily Mail specifically, had revealed that the Blues were set to be bought by a mysterious Middle Eastern consortium after talks with Bill Kenwright.

That came as something of a surprise, after it had been thought that they were duo to sell to an American consortium led by John Jay Moores. Evertonian and former broadcaster Elton Welsby had earlier reported that the proposed takeover by the American investors group had been called off.

And it now transpires that former Arsenal shareholder Moshiri has manoeuvred himself into position to by the club ahead of the Americans. At present it is unknown whether he is operating on his own or has formed a group to buy the club, but a deal could be agreed as early as Tuesday. Moshiri is Iranian by birth, but currently resides in the UK. A British passport holder, he is believed to be worth £2bn.

It is not currently clear if he is the "Middle Easterner" referred to by multiple press outlets. The source cited in those reports are from within the club and said that the situation was too sensitive at this stage to reveal any names.

That has been confirmed by BBC Sport's Phil McNulty, who tweeted as much on Saturday morning.

@Matt_Lawton_DM hitting the nail on head with Everton takeover latest – set to be sold but not to US group.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) February 27, 2016

@stevietoffee @Matt_Lawton_DM Very likely – maybe by Tuesday but shouldn't be long in coming.

— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) February 27, 2016

Moshiri recently sold his stake in the Gunners to their second largest shareholder Alisher Usmanov, with the money from that sale allowing him to take ownership at Goodison Park.

He had grown frustrated with his lack of influence for his money at the Emirates, with his 30.04% not enough to earn him a place on the Gunners board.

According to the report from The Telegraph, Moshiri's willingness to allow current chairman Kenwright to remain in a position of power gives him an advantage over his rival bidders at present.

This puts yet another twist in the now long-running saga of the Everton takeover with multiple proposed owners being linked with the club but nothing concrete observed as yet.

Tim Howard will join Colorado Rapids from Everton via Royal Blue Mersey

USMNT goalkeeper to return home

Multiple media sources are reporting that goalkeeper Tim Howard will be leaving Everton after ten years to join the MLS team Colorado Rapids. The same sources confirmed that Rapids general manager Tim Hinchey was at Finch Farm last week to seal the deal with both the player and the club.

The rumors of the Rapids being interested in Howard were first heard during the January transfer window, but little came of it at the time. The goalkeeper's current contract at the Blues was extended previously until 2018, but Everton were reported to have said they were willing to let the player leave on a free transfer.

However, when the Rapids started getting interested, Everton changed their tune and asked for a fee. Per ESPN FC, that number agreed upon by both sides is reported to be between $600,000 and $750,000.

Some minor issues remain to be resolved – the ownership of the Rapids are yet to give their final okay to the deal.

It is expected that Howard will finish out the season at Goodison Park, possibly getting a testimonial as well should the Blues European challenge fizzle out.

The move will then happen in July this year when the MLS summer transfer window opens. His subsequent contract with the Rapids runs till 2019.

Howard's annual salary will be about $2m, a comedown from his original demands for $5m a year which had caused the talks to hit a snag. Even that revised number makes hi by far the highest earning goalie in MLS.

Colorado Rapids blog Burgundy Wave talks Tim Howard via Royal Blue Mersey

usa-today-7969257.0.jpg

Will Howard go to the MLS at the end of the season?

We had the opportunity to speak with John P Rosch, the managing editor at the excellent Colorado Rapids blog, Burgundy Wave earlier this week. John was kind enough to shed some light on the rumours swirling over the future of Everton and USMNT goalie Tim Howard.

Click here to read the reverse interview as we informed the Burgundy Wave of the goings-on on the Everton side.

RBM – Tim Howard has been linked with the Colorado Rapids right from the outset – what is the link? Or is it the goalie situation at the Rapids fueling these rumors?

BW – The main reason for the link is that the Rapids carry the number one spot in the Major League Soccer Allocation order. For those who may not know what the allocation order is, this is the mechanism that MLS uses to allocate returning USMNT players back to MLS. Basically, when a USMNT player is returning to MLS to play (like Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, etc) they go through this allocation order to be assigned to a team. As the Rapids have that top spot in the allocation order, they are able to work with a player (and his current team) on a transfer to Colorado.

The larger question for many people is why? The Rapids had/have a stable goalkeeping situation. They did trade All-Star Clint Irwin to Toronto FC in the off-season, but still have Zac MacMath who has over 100 starts in Major League Soccer. The Rapids have many needs, but goalkeeping is not one of them. However, Howard offers the Rapids something they have never had: a big, recognizable name that will get 'butts in the seats' and get people energized about this team.

RBM – For a goalkeeper in as bad a rut as Howard is, he sure is asking for a lot of money in wages. How does the Rapids fanbase feel about him and his demands?

BW – Honestly, the demands (if true) are shocking. There is no scenario that paying nearly $5 million a year for four years for a goalkeeper that is in the form of Howard makes sense. The bulk of the Rapids fanbase seem to like the idea of Howard in Burgundy, but can't justify paying that amount. If Howard were to accept less money, I think the fanbase would be quite excited about his pending arrival.

RBM – How about the management at the Rapids, do you think would they be interested in getting Howard despite his advanced years?

BW – The Rapids have been a dumpster fire for the past two years. In 2013, the Rapids were one of the most exciting and young teams in MLS. They set team records for points and wins in that season and made the MLS playoffs. In that off-season they lost their head coach and and began a downward spiral over the next two season that led to 17 wins in 68 games including an 18 game winless run. They have been, in a word, terrible

So for the Rapids, they need to make a splash. They were dead last in attendance last season and the fanbase is restless and frustrated. The Rapids FO believes that Howard could bring people back to the park to see the Rapids and make them a must see event. And they (the Rapids Front Office) are willing to overpay to make that a reality.

RBM – Tell our fans a little more about the Rapids – how about three reasons why Toffees should cheer for Colorado in this upcoming season?

The Rapids are one of the original ten MLS franchises and are beginning their 21st year in the league. They have one MLS Cup Championship (in 2010) and have a very passionate and hard working fanbase that cares for this team very deeply.

Why should Everton cheer for the Rapids?

1) In 2008, the Rapids hosted Everton in Colorado and the Toffees knocked off the Rapids 2-1 in front of a capacity crowd at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (our home pitch).

2) The Rapids are the team that is the underdog in everything. We have to work hard for everything that we have and nothing is given to us. We embrace that role and would not want it any other way.

3) We don't have the big names that other teams have and want to find the diamonds in the rough and win football matches with a team of 11 rather than one or two big names that many other teams have.

———————————-

Our thanks to John for his time and his insight. For Toffees who are looking for a club of similar stature and passion, the Rapids just might be your MLS team to cheer for.

A report on Friday from the Daily Mail had revealed that the Blues were set to be bought by a mysterious Middle Easter consortium following talks with Bill Kenwright.

That was later followed by a report from the Telegraph, who claimed that former Arsenal shareholder Farhad Moshiri had manoeuvred himself into a position to take control of the Blues ahead of other potential bidders.

It was not expected that his takeover would be confirmed until next week at the earliest, but the club have now confirmed that Moshiri has become a new major shareholder, promising investment in the club.

At present it is unknown whether Moshiri is operating on his own of has formed a group to buy the club.

But commenting on the purchase, he says he is delighted to have become a major shareholder at the club, via the club's official website.

I am delighted to take this opportunity to become a shareholder in Everton, with its rich heritage as one of Europe's leading football clubs.

There has never been a more level playing field in the Premier League than now.

Bill Kenwright has taught me what it means to be an Evertonian and I look forward with excitement to working with him to help deliver success for Everton in the future."

His move to Goodison Park comes after he recently sold shares in Arsenal to second highest shareholder Alisher Usmanov.

It is believed he decided to sell his 15% stake in the club after he reportedly grew disillusioned by a lack of control at the club.

And it seems his move for the Blues has been long in the making, with Bill Kenwright commenting that he has gotten to know the new owner well over the last 18 months.

After an exhaustive search I believe we have found the perfect partner to take the Club forward.

I have got to know Farhad well over the last 18 months and his football knowledge, financial wherewithal and True Blue spirit have convinced me that he is the right man to support Everton."
