Everton get absolutely crushed, lose 4-0 to Liverpool in Merseyside Derby via Royal Blue Mersey

It doesn't get much worse than this. The Toffees showed little heart against their rivals.

What an embarrassment. Everton looked content to throw in the towel by the time halftime hit, and it showed in the second 45 minutes as the Blues lost 4-0 to Liverpool on Wednesday.

What is there really to say? If you watched even a moment of the game, you know how awful it really was to witness.

If we want to give the benefit of the doubt, we can say that there was effort to start. Despite Liverpool maintaining much of the possession, the Everton players were sliding in on tackles and using their bodies as shields to stop shots. It was a commendable effort, but as soon as Divock Origi's goal hit the back of the net before halftime, the squad was sunk.

From that point on, there was nothing but lax defending, an inability to maintain an attack and a look of indifference by the players that were on the pitch, which, thanks to Ramiro Funes Mori, was only 10 men after 50 minutes.

Funes Mori stomped on Origi's leg early in the second half and was issued a straight red card. The centerback left the field clutching his Everton badge, but I'm not sure that it was the right moment for the gesture.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's young striker remained on the turf. He had to be stretchered off and the injury looks to be serious. You never want to see a player hurt on account of your own man's rash challenge; another negative on the day for the Toffees.

The three other goals by the Reds were scored by Mamadou Sakho (45' + 2'), Daniel Sturridge (61') and Philippe Coutinho (76'). All looked rather easy against an Everton back line that resembled Swiss cheese; full of holes.

However, that is not to say goalkeeper Joel Robles had a bad game. Actually, it was quite the contrary. If he had been even slightly off, Everton could have seen the score raise to 7-0 or 8-0. He had three or four one-on-one battles with Liverpool attackers that he won. So, on this day, if we want to say there is a Man of the Match for Everton, it was Robles by a mile.

Moving forward, the last saving grace of this season is supposed to be the FA Cup, the semi-final of which takes place on Saturday against Manchester United. While the players seemed disinterested for much of this afternoon's affair, it would seem likely they get excited for the Cup.

But that is going to be tough to do, because Everton may not have any real centerbacks available. Captain Phil Jagielka is out for the time being with an injury. Funes Mori was sent off today and is now ineligible for Saturday. And John Stones went off with an undisclosed issue in the second half, so it looks as though it may be Mo Besic and Gareth Barry at the center of the defense this weekend. That should be a whole lot of fun.

Oh my. The patience has officially run out. Manager Roberto Martinez is likely to keep his job through the FA Cup match, at least. But it does not look promising for him. Why do you do this to me, Everton? I give you so much of my time and my heart, and you just stomp on it.
