Everton face injury crisis ahead of FA Cup semi-final against Man Utd via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton have recalled Matthew Pennington from his loan at Walsall as Roberto Martinez desperately tries to patch up his injury-ravaged squad ahead of Saturday's FA Cup semi-final.

Pennington is in line for a start at Wembley against Manchester United as the fallout from Wednesday's Anfield disaster continues to wreak havoc with the beleaguered Everton manager's selection plans.

Captain Phil Jagielka and full-back Seamus Coleman were already injury doubts ahead of Saturday's game and unlikely to feature. Ramiro Funes Mori will now be suspended after his red card while Gareth Barry is a severe doubt with a groin strain that forced him off at half-time.

John Stones was also forced from the field with stomach cramps early in the second half, leaving Muhamed Besic and James McCarthy as makeshift central defenders. It is hoped that Stones will recover sufficiently in time to play against Louis van Gaal's side.

He will likely start alongside Pennington, who made his Everton debut in the Capital One Cup against Barnsley last August. Leighton Baines should continue at left-back with Bryan Oviedo continuing his awkward stint out of position at right-back.

This patchwork selection is unlikely to raise spirits ahead of Wembley, where defeat will all but certainly end Martinez's reign as manager.
