Everton lose 2-1 to Manchester United, get knocked out of the FA Cup via Royal Blue Mersey

The boys in blue showed tons of heart, but were unable to come out with the win.

It was heart-breaking. It was disappointing. It was tough to swallow. But despite the 2-1 loss, Everton's performance in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United was also a game in which Toffee supporters around the world could say they were proud of their team, which is not a familiar feeling this season.

The first half saw the Red Devils keep almost 60 percent of the possession while peppering Joel Robles in goal with shot after shot. Eventually, they broke through. It was former Blue Marouane Fellaini who did the damage. He received a pass from Anthony Martial in the middle of the box and chipped it into the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Everton was fighting to keep it's collective head above water. Mo Besic struggled at right-back against Martial and Marcus Rashford. Darron Gibson, who rarely sees time with the first team, was doing what he could, but he is no Gareth Barry. And Ross Barkley looked out of sorts early on.

If we are honest with ourselves, Everton was lucky to only be down one goal heading into the locker room for half time. Fellaini had a dominating first 45 minutes. And Robles was a brick wall for the Blues.

The second half saw the Toffees come out on fire. They controlled the pace of the game. Barkley re-asserted himself. John Stones was making sliding blocks on defense while dribbling high up the field with the ball on the offensive end. It was actually fun football to watch!

In the 60th minute, Barkley gave the Blues their best chance to that point. He was taken down in the box by Timothy Fosu-Mensah. Romelu Lukaku took the penalty kick that followed. Freakin' David De Gea used his strong right hand to keep Everton off the scoreboard. It seemed unlikely that the Blues could rebound from there.

But things really came alive when Gerard Deulofeu was substituted on in place on Aaron Lennon minutes later. Immediately, Geri reverted back to his form from early on in the campaign. He was dribbling past defenders and whipping crosses into Romelu Lukaku. One cross ended up going in, but it was ManU's Chris Smalling who got the final touch. The goal was deserved for Everton, as they had United on the back foot for pretty much the entirety of the second half.

The Toffees kept pushing and looked likely to score again, but it wasn't meant to be. Lukaku had several chances, only to have them blocked or saved. Tom Cleverley put himself into promising positions on two different occasions, but was unable to finish.

Manchester United took advantage of the misses and inevitably broke our hearts. Ander Herrera fed the ball to Martial, who had beaten Stones. From there, Martial just slotted the ball past Robles for the finish in the last minute of stoppage time. Of course.

This game could be the defining moment of the Everton 2015-16 season and going forward. They showed the type of talent and entertaining football they can display with this roster when they use their passion and creativity. It did not turn out perfectly, but it was a respectable showing that few fans will complain about.

It seems likely that manager Roberto Martinez may be fired before next week. But this team didn't seem to be playing for their manager. They played for one another. They played for the badge on their chest. They played for Merseyside. That is all Everton supporter have ever wanted. These men are given a tremendous opportunity to play a sport for a living. If they give 100 percent effort at all times, they will be revered. So, while this season has been a failure, for one day, we can be happy to call Everton "our club".

Toffees down to the bare bones for Wembley clash

Was there a game Wednesday? Are you sure? Well it explains all the injuries and suspension that have come out of nowhere!

Before Wednesday's Merseyside Derby Everton were without their skipper Phil Jagielka and right-back Seamus Coleman through hamstring injuries and that looks to be the case again Saturday. Jagielka does face a late fitness test but is being described as 'very doubtful' – as is Gareth Barry with the groin injury he picked up against Liverpool. John Stones also came off in that game with stomach cramps; which must still be troubling the centre-back because he is described as a slight doubt. To add insult to injury, after his reckless tackle on Wednesday, Ramiro Funes Mori is suspended for the clash with Manchester United. One player returning is young Matthew Pennington, who was recalled from his loan at promotion-chasing Walsall following the fallout from Anfield. Pennington comes fresh from a man of the match performance on Tuesday in the Saddlers' 1-1 draw at home to Swindon Town and is expected to start at centre-half at Wembley.

United on the other hand, are nearly close to full strength after a season blighted by injuries. Other than long term injuries to Bastian Schweinsteiger (knee) and Luke Shaw (broken leg) – the Red Devils only have Adnan Januzaj and Will Keane missing through hamstring and groin injuries, respectively.

Everton vs Manchester United: FA Cup 2016 Semi Final Matchday via Royal Blue Mersey

GettyImages-491850107.0.jpg

With nothing left to play for in the Premier League, this is Everton's match of the season as they take on Manchester United in the FA Cup semi final at Wembley.

It's finally here, the FA Cup Semi-final that we have been waiting for. However, any hopes of a trip to final have all but disappeared after the seemingly endless sting of bad performances culminating in the 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby.

As if the loss to Liverpool wasn't enough, the team suffered a string of injuries to their back line and a suspension to defender Ramiro Funes Mori. Roberto Martinez's insistence on playing a full strength squad in the Derby has back fired big time and the team looks set to pay the price.

The Opposition

Not much has changed for United since they faced the Toffees earlier in the month and they still remain a difficult opponent. United's injury woes have subsided somewhat and should only be without Bastian Schweinsteiger, Adnan Januzaj and Luke Shaw. While Louis van Gaal's side may have struggled throughout the season, they have a contingent of dangerous youngster's mixed in with skilled veterans like Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata.

Their form has also been decent as of late, despite having a relatively easy finish to their season. After defeating Everton, they lost 3-0 to Tottenham, but were able to string together two clean sheet wins against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. Manchester United are back to their solid defensive ways and this struggling Everton team will likely struggle to put shots in the goals.

Team News

Just when it seemed as though Everton's injury woes couldn't get any worse, they did. Ramiro Funes Mori will obviously miss this weekend's match due to a red card suspension, Seamus Coleman is ruled out through injury and captain Phil Jagielka is also severely doubtful. Matthew Pennington has been recalled from his loan with Walsall and could be in line for a start, leaving the team with even less experience on the back line.

John Stones and Gareth Barry will also be game-time decisions having left the Liverpool match early. It will be impossible for Martinez to put his best squad together for this important match and will struggle to put an overly competitive squad on the pitch.

The Final Word

Everton enter this game in their worst form in recent memory. Not only does it seem like the team doesn't care, but they've all but tuned-out their manager. Whatever bit of pride remained in the squad, it seems to have disappeared after Divock Origi scored the first goal of Wednesday's match.

Maybe this team has a miracle in their pockets, but like most Evertonians I am feeling pretty short on hope at the moment.

Projected Starting XI: Robles, Baines, Stones, Pennington, Oviedo, Besic, McCarthy, Mirallas, Barkley, Lennon, Lukaku
