Everton lose 3-0, Sunderland secures Premier League spot for next season via Royal Blue Mersey
Another awful, terrible, embarrassing performance.
There is no joy left in watching
Everton play football this season. Was there ever really any happiness in this 2015-16 campaign? It would be difficult to remember. But the suffering that most Evertonians have had to endure is nearly over. The Toffees lost…again. This time 3-0 to
Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The win for the hosts secures them a spot in the Premier League for next year.
Writing these instant reactions leaves me feeling like I'm in an insane asylum. It's the same thing, every game. Nothing changes. Today, Everton saw a big bulk of the possession, but did nothing with it. On the opposite side, the Black Cats utilized their limited possession and struck with precision. Ya know, like a real football team. This is Sunderland we are talking about. Yes, they had something to play for today, but come on!
The goals
Everton didn't score any, so we will make this short and sweet:
Patrick van Aanholt began the onslaught in the 38th minute with a free kick from about ten yards outside the box. He knocked it through a group of blue shirts that sort of resembled a poorly built wall. Goalkeeper Joel Robles never saw it until it was past him.
Then, 27-year-old center back Lamine Kone scored the first brace of his career. His first goal came just minutes after van Aanholt's effort. Following a corner,
Leighton Baines made a half-hearted clearance. The ball was played back into the box to the last man, Kone. James McCarthy played him onside and Kone finished with a thunderous strike.
In the second half. Kone's second goal came after a corner as well. It was an in-swinging effort that Robles barely dealt with to keep out of the net. The ball fell right in front of goal and Kone cleaned up the mess to make it a three-goal advantage.
Really, there could have been more goals. Sunderland always looked like the better side, while Everton struggled to do much of anything on attack.
What's next?
There is no reason for
Roberto Martinez to manage Everton in its final game of the season at Goodison Park on Saturday. The club has been completely embarrassed in two big matches within the last week. Plus, supporters have felt the man should be fired for months now. Sending Martinez into that environment is doing nothing positive.
If you want to watch that final game, the Blues will be hosting Norwich, who have just been relegated. Two sides with nothing to play for but the badge on their shirts. Makes me scared to see the effort put forth to be honest. Kick-off is 15:00 local time, 10 a.m. EST in the United States.
