Everton lose 3-0, Sunderland secures Premier League spot for next season via Royal Blue Mersey

Another awful, terrible, embarrassing performance.

There is no joy left in watching Everton play football this season. Was there ever really any happiness in this 2015-16 campaign? It would be difficult to remember. But the suffering that most Evertonians have had to endure is nearly over. The Toffees lost…again. This time 3-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The win for the hosts secures them a spot in the Premier League for next year.

Writing these instant reactions leaves me feeling like I'm in an insane asylum. It's the same thing, every game. Nothing changes. Today, Everton saw a big bulk of the possession, but did nothing with it. On the opposite side, the Black Cats utilized their limited possession and struck with precision. Ya know, like a real football team. This is Sunderland we are talking about. Yes, they had something to play for today, but come on!

The goals

Everton didn't score any, so we will make this short and sweet:

Patrick van Aanholt began the onslaught in the 38th minute with a free kick from about ten yards outside the box. He knocked it through a group of blue shirts that sort of resembled a poorly built wall. Goalkeeper Joel Robles never saw it until it was past him.

Then, 27-year-old center back Lamine Kone scored the first brace of his career. His first goal came just minutes after van Aanholt's effort. Following a corner, Leighton Baines made a half-hearted clearance. The ball was played back into the box to the last man, Kone. James McCarthy played him onside and Kone finished with a thunderous strike.

In the second half. Kone's second goal came after a corner as well. It was an in-swinging effort that Robles barely dealt with to keep out of the net. The ball fell right in front of goal and Kone cleaned up the mess to make it a three-goal advantage.

Really, there could have been more goals. Sunderland always looked like the better side, while Everton struggled to do much of anything on attack.

What's next?

There is no reason for Roberto Martinez to manage Everton in its final game of the season at Goodison Park on Saturday. The club has been completely embarrassed in two big matches within the last week. Plus, supporters have felt the man should be fired for months now. Sending Martinez into that environment is doing nothing positive.

If you want to watch that final game, the Blues will be hosting Norwich, who have just been relegated. Two sides with nothing to play for but the badge on their shirts. Makes me scared to see the effort put forth to be honest. Kick-off is 15:00 local time, 10 a.m. EST in the United States.

Frank de Boer Resigns From Ajax, Could Everton Appointment be Imminent? via Royal Blue Mersey

Hours after a 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, one of the rumored front runners to replace Roberto Martinez has quit his job. Ajax manager Frank de Boer resigned his position Wednesday night and it could mean news about Roberto Martinez will come quickly.

Earlier this week de Boer, through his agent, claimed to be interested in managing a club like Everton or Valencia. And the Ajax manager would be a good fit. He started his coaching career with the famed Ajax youth sides before moving into into an assistant coach role with the Netherlands National Team. In 2010 he was named manager of Ajax and has managed to win 4 league titles in that span and finish in 2nd twice.

The timing of the comments and the resignation certainly make things interesting. Ajax did just complete their season this past weekend, but with Everton's poor performance Wednesday night and the resignation you have to wonder if something is up. It doesn't seem likely Martinez will be trotted out in front of the supporters for the final home game of the season, that is just cruel for the supporters after all. And giving a new manager a chance to meet the squad before the summer holiday would be beneficial.

Frank de Boer is a young manager, at only 45, but his playing career inspires confidence and he should be able to relate to the players. De Boer has won countless trophies playing at Ajax and Barcelona as well as his managerial honors so he knows the mentality needed to win. That mentality may be the biggest thing Everton is missing. This squad didn't suddenly go dumb and forget how to play soccer, but they did forget how to be a professional mentally. Frank de Boer can do that.
