Everton vs West Ham: Extended Highlights via Royal Blue Mersey
All the goals, chances and saves
Everton showed once again that despite their recent run of decent results, the mental fragility that forms the backbone of this team remains as delicate as ever. At 2-0 up despite being a man down, the Blues wasted first a penalty and then a one-on-one opportunity that would have sealed the game. Instead, West Ham United continued the aerial bombardment until they broke through once, then twice and then for the winner in time added on. Meanwhile, like multiple times before at Goodison, the hosts looked powerless to stem the tide.
Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley both epitomized Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" as they looked unstoppable in the first half, and then completely impotent in the second. Lukaku with a smart finish after fifteen minutes got Everton ahead and then Aaron Lennon nipped in behind the defence early in the second to put the Blues ahead by two and looking comfortable. Kevin Mirallas meanwhile had already been sent off in the 35th minute after a purported dive and rash sliding tackle had accounted for two yellow cards for him.
Lukaku then missed a penalty after Besic was brought down, and proceeded to shoot at goalie Adrian when put clean through, and you could sense the Toffees missed their opportunity as the Hammers were emboldened and scored twice from crosses into the box. And then just into time added on, the visitors hammered the final nail into the Blues home disaster. 3-2 final score, and any remaining hopes of Europa League football all but evaporated.
