Everton release squad numbers for 2016/17 season via Royal Blue Mersey

Barkley and Oviedo make a trade. Besic moves to 21. Deulofeu to 7.

Following the big news of the day that Everton had finally signed an outfield player, Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa, they also dropped in the fact that the squad numbers of the current roster have been finalized. There have been some major changes.

The newbies

Gueye nabs 17, formerly worn by Tim Cahill, Romelu Lukaku and Mo Besic.

Maarten Stekelenburg will be number 22, which was vacated when Steven Pienaar left after last season.

Shani Tarashaj will go with 24, formerly Tim Howard’s number for many years before the goalkeeper headed back to the MLS.

Changes within the first team

Besic gave up 17 in order to take 21, left by Leon Osman at the end of the year.

Gerard Deulofeu will move from 19 to 7, which was actually already taken by a teammate. Awkward.

Ross Barkley and Bryan Oviedo traded numbers. The Englishman will now don 8 and the Costa Rican will settle into 20.

Youngsters Kieran Dowell and Tom Davies both edged closer to the lower numbers that they both are likely aiming for. Dowell switches from 51 to 28. Davies goes from 41 to 26

Omissions

No one is set to wear Tony Hibbert’s old number 2, for now. Surely, Everton will retire that number for ever. Sike!

The biggest news is that none of Aiden McGeady, Oumar Niasse or Luke Garbutt were even given numbers. In fact, McGeady’s preferred number 7 was given to Deulofeu. So, the writing is pretty much on the wall for those three: look for somewhere else to play your football.

Swansea City reject Everton’s £10 million offer for Ashley Williams via Royal Blue Mersey

Chairman Huw Jenkins is demanding a bigger fee for the Wales international

According to the Mirror, Swansea City have rejected Everton’s £10 million bid for Ashley Williams.

The Blues are thought to be keen on the Wales international as they look to improve their defence this summer.

They had made a move for him last week, with reports that they had already agreed a deal and he was close to completing a move.

Indeed, rumours on Tuesday had suggested that the Swans defender was on Merseyside to complete a medical ahead of a move.

However, it appears that the potential deal has hit a snag as Swansea City have rejected their £10 million bid, according to the Mirror.

They report that Huw Jenkins has dug in his heels and is now demanding an improved fee for one of his side’s key men.

At this moment in time it is unknown whether Ronald Koeman and co will return with such a bid.

Williams would be an excellent signing to say the least, but they are likely to be hesitant to pay an inflated fee for a player who is set to turn 32 next month.

Can Jagielka and Stones bounce back under Koeman’s leadership? via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton Season Preview: Center Backs

Current Players:

Ramiro Funes Mori, 25

Phil Jagielka, 33

John Stones, 22

Key Departures: None, yet.

Key Arrivals: None to date

Returning Players: At this point the Toffees will be bringing back their full lot of center backs for the 2016-2017 campaign. Those fist three words – “at this point” must be stressed as it is widely expected that John Stones will depart for Manchester City in the coming weeks. But for now he’s in royal blue instead of sky blue so we’ll keep him in our list. Joining Stones in the center of the backfield are veteran and captain, Phil Jagielka and the ill-disciplined Argentinian Ramiro Funes Mori.

Everton also has some young players who can move between different positions on the back line including center back in Matthew Pennington, Tyias Browning, Mason Holgate and Brendan Galloway. Depending on how the season goes, and whether or not they are sent out on loan, we may see some of them in action; likely in tandem with some of the more veteran players.

Tactics: With one exception last season (Reading in the Capital One Cup), old boss Roberto Martinez kept four defenders on the back line. His preferred pairing was Jagielka and Stones though Jags was limited throughout the season with knee and hamstring injuries. With Jags off the pitch, Ramiro Funes Mori got more than his fair share of playing time as well.

Unlike Martinez, the Toffee’s new manager, Ronald Koeman was more adventurous with his lineups at Southampton; changing his formations virtually every week. Depending on his read of the competition, he would have between three and five defenders lined up at the back. His new club certainly have the depth to run out those defenders but outside of the top three center backs listed there remains questions of experience and quality. It is noteworthy though that the club has been rumored to be interested in a number of new center backs including Premier League veterans Jose Fonte (32, Southampton) and Ashley Williams (31, Swansea).

Summary: Seeing what the new regime will do with the entire squad will be very interesting this season. The center back position will be one of the bigger areas to keep an eye on as the club is in the midst of a transition with Jagielka entering the twilight of his career and struggling with injuries and Stones, once seen as the future planning on walking out the door.

Funes Mori has shown potential, enough to be a starter on the top ranked team in the world, but he has also demonstrated a lack of discipline which has cost the team dearly at times. With the departure of Stones seemingly imminent, the 2016-2017 campaign will be the Argentinian’s time to take that big step forward and cement himself in the lineup.

Even if Koeman brings in the rumored reinforcements, they will only be a short-term stopgap due to their advanced ages. They may though buy the manager enough time to let new Director of Football, Steve Walsh work his magic.
