Blues face League Two opposition

The draw for the 2nd Round of the renamed English Football League (EFL) Cup was just completed and Everton will take on Yeovil Town between August 23-25. The two clubs have never played against each other before.

Everton reached the semi-finals of this competition last season, before losing to eventual winners Manchester City on aggregate in a two-legged semi-final.

The Toffees will be away at West Bromwich Albion in the weekend leading up to the game, followed by a home game against Stoke City.

Yeovil reached the 2nd Round after beating Walsall 2-0 away from home in the preceding tie. They are off to a good start in League Two this season as well, having won 2-0 at home against Notts County. They are managed by Darren Way, who played for Swansea City between 2006-08.

Founded in 1895, Yeovil Town Football Club, also known as the Glovers, are based in Somerset, England. They are currently in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. They won the League Two championship in 2004–05, and were promoted to the Championship via the play-offs as recently as 2013.

Yeovil remained a non-League team for 108 years before they won the Football Conference in 2003 to join the Football League. During that time, they were one of the most successful non-league teams in the FA Cup, beating Sunderland in the fourth round in 1949.

Since 2003 though they have only reached the third round twice including, in 2004 against Liverpool and Charlton Athletic in 2005.

The Glovers play at Huish Park, built in 1990 on the site of an old army camp and was notorious for its pitch, which had an 8 feet slope from one sideline to the other. The club's nickname refers to the town’s glove-making history during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Here is the rest of the 2nd Round draw from Wednesday –

Player’s agency hints new number in Instagram post

According to an Instagram post from the player’s agency New Era Global Sports, it looks like new Everton signing Ashley Williams will switch from his usual number 6 which is worn by Phil Jagielka to number 5. Here is the short video that shows his physical and first day at Everton.

If you’ll notice about half way through this shot appears.

So unless there is some change later on before the official announcement it looks like Williams will wear the number 5. That has him taking the number left just a few days ago by John Stones and previous to that by Samuel Eto’o, John Heitinga and Joleon Lescott. Based on this video I’d expect an official announcement very soon and sales of his jersey to be available soon after.

There is no word as yet if the club stores will allow free jersey name swaps like they did with Ross Barkley and Muhamed Besic who switched numbers in this offseason as well.

Everton complete transfer of defender Ashley Williams via Royal Blue Mersey

Ashley Williams comes to Everton for £9 million from Swansea City

According to the Mirror, Swansea City have rejected Everton’s £10 million bid for Ashley Williams.

The Blues are thought to be keen on the Wales international as they look to improve their defence this summer.

They had made a move for him last week, with reports that they had already agreed a deal and he was close to completing a move.

Indeed, rumours on Tuesday had suggested that the Swans defender was on Merseyside to complete a medical ahead of a move.

However, it appears that the potential deal has hit a snag as Swansea City have rejected their £10 million bid, according to the Mirror.

They report that Huw Jenkins has dug in his heels and is now demanding an improved fee for one of his side’s key men.

At this moment in time it is unknown whether Ronald Koeman and co will return with such a bid.

Williams would be an excellent signing to say the least, but they are likely to be hesitant to pay an inflated fee for a player who is set to turn 32 next month.

Oh boy, this could’ve been awkward

As soon as Everton completed the signing of Wales defender Ashley Williams yesterday from Swansea City, the Blues Twitter army kicked into overdrive, tweeting the player messages of love and fellowship, welcoming him to the club.

The only problem with that? Ashley Williams the footballer does not have a Twitter account, or at least not a public one that we know of.

Instead, fans have been tweeting Ashley Williams the actress, who plays the wife of comedian Jim Gaffigan in The Jim Gaffigan Show. She is a television, film and Broadway actress, known for her roles in Good Morning Miami, Snow,Snow 2: Brain Freeze, and Montana Sky, and for her guest appearances on long-running comedy How I Met Your Mother.

Here is her tweet in response to the deluge of tweets from Toffees around the world –

Hey all soccer fans who are congratulating me about #AshleyWilliams move to Everton: watch #TheJimGaffiganShow! Also I'm terrible at soccer

— ashley williams (@imthesmash) August 10, 2016

So there folks, take a second to look at the profile of who you’re tweeting at before you start talking about how you wish they’d replace John Stones.
