Bolasie set for debut as Everton seek lift off against West Brom via Royal Blue Mersey

Everton’s first away game of the season sees them take on West Brom at the Hawthorns

Everton fans were given a taster of what the Ronald Koeman era may bring to the club during the first half against Tottenham last weekend. But a laboured second period was a hangover from the Roberto Martinez era and sobering reminder of how much remedial work needs to be done on the squad.

That said there was plenty to be positive about during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. The team played with a tempo and aggression rarely seen since David Moyes’ departure three years ago and fully deserved their 1-0 lead at half-time.

Idrissa Gueye in particular impressed, suggesting he could well be one of the signings of the summer at a little over £7m.

Sadly, Koeman wasn’t lying when he said the squad was only 70% fit and their alarming drop off after the break meant they were clinging on for a point at the end.

There was also a worrying lack of options from the substitutes bench, with the sight of Arouna Kone entering the field in the second half drawing howls of derision from the home crowd.

The arrivals of Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolaise therefore are timely ahead of Everton’s first away trip of the season.

Another week of hard training should also mean the players are better prepared and conditioned to last 90 minutes – a worryingly basic requirement that was so often lacking under Koeman’s predecessor.

The opposition

After a relatively quiet summer in the transfer market so far West Brom were tipped by many to struggle.

But last week’s season-opening win at Crystal Palace suggests the canny Tony Pulis will once again sprinkle enough magic on the Baggies squad to keep them away from danger.

They contain all the elements of a typical Pulis side; extremely fit, extremely well organised and extremely dangerous from set pieces and crosses from wide areas.

Pulis does admit though that his side is short on numbers and hopes to add five new faces before the end of the transfer window.

Matt Phillips is their only summer signing so far, the forward costing £5.5m from Championship side QPR.

His transfer kitty has no doubt been boosted by the recent takeover of the club by a Chinese Investment group.

Their star player remains Saido Berahino, though speculation continues to rage about his future at the Hawthorns.

Stoke have already had a bid turned down for the forward this summer with the Baggies insistent it will only take an amazing offer – and successful search for a replacement – for them to do a deal.

Last season’s meeting proved to be one of the rare highlights of an otherwise dismal campaign. Despite falling 2-0 down at the start of the second half two goals from Romelu Lukaku and another from Arouna Kone sealed a remarkable comeback that briefly lifted Everton up to fifth in the table.

Team news

Yannick Bolaise could make his Everton debut having completed his £26m move from Crystal Palace on Monday.

Ashley Williams is in the squad but will be assessed having returned to pre-season late following Euro 2016.

Romelu Lukaku could make his first appearance of the season after resuming training following a heel injury.

Everton will still be without Seamus Coleman though with the Ireland defender likely to be sidelined for at least two weeks with an ankle injury.

Final Word

If Everton can maintain the level of performance shown during the first half against Tottenham for 90 minutes against West Brom then they should come away with all three points.

Their fitness levels should have improved following another week of gruelling training while the arrivals of Williams and Bolaise offer valuable options.

West Brom are always a tough side to beat and will be full of confidence following the opening day win at Selhurst park.

However, I fancy Everton to snatch the win and truly launch the Ronald Koeman era in style.

Predicted Everton XI: Stekelenberg, Baines, Williams, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry, Gueye, Bolaise, Barkley, Mirallas, Lukaku.

Ronald Koeman has made plans for life with or without Romelu Lukaku via The Guardian

• Everton manager accepts striker’s future remains uncertain
• Koeman: ‘We know there is a lot of interest in him, he is a good player’
Ronald Koeman admits he is uncertain about Romelu Lukaku’s future at Everton and has made one plan with and one plan without the striker, who continues to be linked with a return to Chelsea.

Everton have yet to receive a suitable bid for the 23-year-old and are not encouraging one but Koeman accepts the situation will remain fluid until the transfer window closes. Lukaku looks set to return to the Everton squad for their match at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Lamine Kone edges closer to Everton move after turning down new Sunderland deal via Royal Blue Mersey

Defender could soon make £18m switch to Goodison Park

Everton have received a boost in their bid to sign Sunderland’s Lamine Kone with the news that the defender has turned down a new deal at the Stadium of Light.

Ronald Koeman wants to add another defender his squad and reportedly agreed a fee in the region of £18m with Sunderland for Kone earlier this month.

Kone then seemingly tried to force through the move by handing in a transfer request, citing broken promises over a new contract.

Sunderland boss David Moyes responded by reiterating his desire to keep Kone in the north-east and was ready to offer him a new deal on September 1.

The Scot has since revealed he made the contract offer early but Kone has turned it down, seemingly clearing the path to Goodison Park.

David Moyes says Lamine Kone has refused a new, improved deal at Sunderland and "arrived in this morning with a bad back."

Moyes says he made Kone the new contract offer earlier than Sept 1 to give him the security he's asked for, but he doesn't want it.

— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 19, 2016

Moyes: "We hope he (Kone) sees we want him to be here. We have that offer from Everton (for him) and he knows that as well."

Everton may now step up their efforts to sign Ivory Coast defender Kone, who cost Sunderland just £5m from Lorient in January.

It will also be interesting to see how Moyes responds to Everton’s interest given how he behaved when trying to sign Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines while Man Utd boss in the summer of 2013.

Back then Moyes said he would have let both players leave had he still been in charge at Everton “for the good of their careers”.

Will he now apply the same logic?

Lukaku commits future to Everton via Royal Blue Mersey

Bold statement from striker

Forward Romelu Lukaku has had talks with Everton manager Ronald Koeman, and will stay with Everton. The Mirror is reporting that the Belgium striker will ignore Chelsea’s apparent interest in him. Reports earlier have said that Lukaku has been offered a new improved contract that would make him Everton’s highest-paid player ever, which would go with his label of being the Toffees most expensive transfer player, unless Bolasie makes the add-ons in his deal.

Earlier in the summer, Chelsea believed they would re-sign Lukaku in a £68million deal, two years after he’d left them in a then-Everton record £28m move.

David Anderson of The Mirror is now reporting that Lukaku would rebuff any approaches from Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge, and would indeed apply himself to the Everton project that the Dutch manager is building.

The timing of Lukaku’s comments are all the more interesting with Koeman saying earlier today that he already had a plan in place for if the player left.

“I have two plans – one is with Lukaku and one without him. Of course we have names in mind. We can use one more in that position [anyway].

“There is a lot of interest for him we know, he’s a good player. Finally, you can’t win it if really it is a big team who spend a lot of money for an Everton player or a Southampton player.

“I had the same story in Southampton. But there was not really that big bid on table and still now there is no big bid on the table.”

This knowledge will come as a big relief to Everton fans as they can finally rest easy knowing that any incoming striker signings will be to augment Lukaku, and not replace the forward.

West Bromwich Albion vs. Everton 2016: live stream, start time, TV schedule and how to watch online via Royal Blue Mersey

Can the Toffees break down the West Brom defense and get their first win of the Ronald Koeman era?

We are just one week into Everton's first Premier League season under new manager Ronald Koeman, but the gaffer's fingerprint's are already all over this team, in a good way. His first senior outfield signing, Idrissa Gueye, debuted against Tottenham in the opener and earned Man of the Match honors and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was phenomenal. This week, we could very well see both newcomers Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie make their first appearance in the royal blue. It's OK to be giddy about this team.

For Bolasie, this will be the second consecutive game he plays against West Bromwich Albion, who topped his former club Crystal Palace 1-0 when the winger came on as a sub in the 66th minute last Saturday. Odds are he will be used in a substitute capacity yet again, but let's hope for a better result this time.

Last season, this fixture saw the two teams each nab wins on the road. First, Everton topped the Baggies 3-2 in September after going down by two goals from Saido Berahino and Craig Dawson. The Blues came roaring back thanks to a Romelu Lukaku brace and a goal from Arouna Kone. Then in February, Everton was undone by a single Salomon Rondon score, losing 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Against Spurs, Everton had to deal with seeing little of the ball and making opportunities on the counter. In the end, their only goal came from a set piece. Today, it will be the Toffees who have all of the possession and they will need to beat a West Brom side that will likely have 10 men behind the ball for 90 minutes. With it sounding like Lukaku is fit again this could be a dangerous Everton attack.

Oh yeah, you also get your first in-game look at Everton in their new yellow kit. It sounds like it's going to be a cloudy day, but you won't have any trouble spotting these boys.

West Brom v Everton – The Preview via Everton Arent We

Bolasie.jpg

Well, that’s one down. Just the 39 (minimum) to go.

The Ronald Koeman show has rolled into town and given its first performance, and it’s fair to say that the buzzword is “promising”. We realised that there is a long, long way to go until we see the finished article, but at least at last it seems we’re heading in the right direction. While it’s too soon to tell, and if you want to see a false dawn then the 2013/14 season review is available on DVD and YouTube, we could be making our way to the top with a plan in place to stay there for good.

Spurs were good opposition, not at their best but boasting plenty of talent, and in the first half they barely got a sniff. An early goal, not conceding an early equaliser, and looking good value for the lead despite not winning the possession all equated to the makings of a fantastic performance. From the start of the second period we then proved why Ronald Koeman said we were at 70%, and dropped off. THAT’S RIGHT. AN EVERTON MANAGER DIDN’T UNDERSTATE OR OVERSTATE MATTERS, TOLD THE HONEST TRUTH, AND WAS PROVED CORRECT.

Brave new world, people.

The Spurs match, plus the club stepping things up in the transfer market, has allowed some much-needed optimism to seep in. Cringeworthy Twitter antics aside, Ashley Williams is a superb addition to the back line and while Yannick Bolasie may not justify the price tag, who really does? How can one person even justify that sort of expenditure nowadays, without inspiring hundreds of millions of shirt sales? Let him play. He will have great games and awful games, like any winger. His crossing will be suspect, like any Everton winger. Stekelenburg was excellent against Spurs – worth remembering that he is still an international goalkeeper with lots of top class experience, despite being third choice at Fulham behind Marcus Bettinelli and that Michael Jackson statue. And Idrissa Gueye had a fantastic debut, his all-action style meaning we had a real midfield presence.

Coleman.jpg

What the match on Saturday also provided was an opportunity for Ronald Koeman to see exactly how the squad needed reinforcing. Erwin Koeman spoke of the need for a big squad and lots of competition, which was conspicuous only in its absence last season. Seamus Coleman’s injury was a reminder that in positions such as his, there is not much depth. James McCarthy however proved in his absence that he might still have a future at the club under a manager who likes energy and a high work rate from his midfielders. But what do you know? Koeman’s out talking to the media about the fact we’re keeping an eye out for players who can provide competition at right back.

And if you’re cryarsing because the Echo’s off selling Lukaku again, calm down. If Koeman didn’t have a contingency plan for Lukaku going as well as staying he’d be a naïve fool. Probably one who says “phenomenal” a lot.

Before Mr Moshiri starts lashing the cash about like he’s in Popworld on payday, let’s get on to the next game.

West Brom it is, and while they’re mostly an inoffensive team with an inoffensive fanbase, there’s a couple of gripes here. Firstly, we’re running head-on into a game of Pulisball, which results in a drab 1-1 more times than not. Him and his perma-glare, like he keeps spotting his wife winking across the room at someone. Then there’s the bouncing. Grown men and women yelling “boing boing!” is right up there with the tiger face paint at Hull and Kopites doing…well, pretty much everything they do.

Foster in goal for them, very much their John Ruddy in that you wonder why he’s not at a bigger club until the inevitable proof comes. Two major grocks in defence, Olsson and Dawson, with McAuley and Evans filling the gaps. James McClean is too busy making yer da’s head fall off COLLECTING THE QUEEN’S MONEY on the bench, so Matt Phillips will be tasked with keeping Leighton Baines penned in. Fletcher, Gardner and Grock Number Three Claudio Yacob. Salomon Rondon has the quality to notch up a fair few goals this season, so watch out for him. Saido Berahino was linked with Spurs last season and Stoke this, and it’s no less than he deserves. Rickie Lambert on the bench if we all fancy a laugh.

Stekelenburg.jpg

On to us then. Stekelenburg in net, hopefully set to continue the form he showed at Goodison last weekend. Whether we shuffle the formation remains to be seen, though Ashley Williams should come in for Mason Holgate, who looks like he’ll do just fine getting first team experience here and there and developing as a player. Funes Mori and Jagielka in the middle with Williams, McCarthy and Baines flanking them. Gueye and Gareth Barry in the middle, with Bolasie and Deulofeu up top. Unless Lukaku’s fit, in which case Bolasie may take a place alongside Mirallas on the bench. Looks like there’s options. Don’t get too excited mind, Koné is still in the squad.

Shorter preview this week, and it could’ve been even shorter. If I’d kept to saying that last week showed potential and hopefully we’ll continue on the right path by leathering this absolute 14th-place fodder, that would’ve saved you some time and boredom. To reduce it even further, watch this space.

Always thrash sides when we’ve got the naff third kit on don’t we? Up the Yellows.
