Everton v Manchester City: match preview via The Guardian

Pep Guardiola’s last visit to Merseyside ended in defeat and recrimination at Anfield on New Year’s Eve, although that was the only game in the last six that Manchester City have failed to win. Guardiola’s side were on top form at West Ham United and Ronald Koeman said City could repeat that 5-0 FA Cup win should Everton reproduce the feeble defensive display that led to them being knocked out of the competition by Leicester City last weekend. New signings Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman could feature for the hosts. Andy Hunter

Paperwork rules Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus out of Everton game via The Guardian

• Gabriel Jesus’s registration at the Football Association not complete
• Vincent Kompany could play at Everton after two months out
Gabriel Jesus must continue to wait for his Manchester City debut but Vincent Kompany could return at Everton on Sunday. Jesus officially joined City from Palmeiras this month but his registration has not yet gone through.

“He cannot play – papers,” Pep Guardiola said of the 19-year-old Brazil international. “When Palmeiras and the FA solve the problems he will be able to play.” Most of the paperwork has been done and City are confident the remainder will be completed soon, meaning Jesus could be available to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League next weekend. The issue may not have overly concerned Guardiola this week, however, with the manager having said the forward needs to build up match fitness in training.

Ronald Koeman faces up to Everton’s future after dealing with his past via The Guardian

Everton’s manager Ronald Koeman insists he is putting down the right foundations at Goodison Park despite early cup exits and indifferent league form
First there was Lionel Messi equalling his record of 26 converted free-kicks for Barcelona. The death of Graham Taylor then brought his role in that World Cup qualifier back into the spotlight and at Goodison Park on Sunday he will be reacquainted with his European Cup winning team-mate Pep Guardiola. The past has echoed for Ronald Koeman this week while he attempts to mould Everton’s future. It is one that he accepts must improve on the present.

Koeman and Guardiola meet regularly now they live in close proximity – Alderley Edge for the Everton manager, Manchester for City’s – and how the former must envy the latter’s problems. Manchester City, for all Guardiola’s angst and disappointments, still harbour hope of the Premier League title, are still in the FA Cup and have secured a date with Monaco in the last 16 of the Champions League. Everton have commenced the January overhaul demanded by their manager – signing Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman in deals that could total £35m, submitting a £10.4m bid for Ishak Belfodil, offloading Tom Cleverley to Watford and Oumar Niasse to Hull City – but their immediate horizon appears bereft by comparison.

Everton’s Morgan Schneiderlin aims to ‘overtake’ Manchester United via The Guardian

• Morgan Schneiderlin: ‘I believe Everton can reach the Champions League’
• José Mourinho wanted France midfielder to stay at Manchester United
Morgan Schneiderlin has said he is aiming to overtake Manchester United with his new club Everton and that José Mourinho was reluctant to sanction his departure from Old Trafford.

The France international joined Everton for an initial £20m rising to £24m on Thursday having failed to secure a regular starting role at United. Schneiderlin admits he “didn’t arrive in the best time in Manchester United’s history” with criticism arising from a style of play under Louis van Gaal that “wasn’t very attractive”. Despite leaving Old Trafford on good terms, however, the 27-year-old is determined to overturn a nine-point deficit on his former club this season and eventually lead Everton into the Champions League.
