Everton’s Romelu Lukaku is a traditional No9 who could play in any era via The Guardian

The Belgian striker has the muscle, bustle and hustle to cause opponents damage and, despite a few faults, would be a name to be feared on any teamsheet

There is much about modern football that would bewilder a visitor from 100 years ago. Even after they had got used to the lightweight kit, the ball that bent and swerved and did not absorb water as the game went on, the firm and grassy pitches, the goalkeepers in latex gloves and the extraordinary cost of everything, they would still be puzzled by how the game was played.

Why all the defenders? And why did they all play so far from their goal? And what was the goalkeeper doing coming that far out? (Get back! You’re not Leigh Roose!). And why did so many strikers play like GO Smith of the Corinthians, dropping deep all the time? But Everton would provide him with some solace.

Everton’s plans for a new stadium have cleared the first hurdle after Liverpool City Council approved the establishment of a scheme to help with funding for the project.

Liverpool and Everton fans face fight for soul of football in the city – video via The Guardian

Fans of Liverpool and Everton have experienced many highs and lows, but never such a concentrated period of change as they’re both going through now. Liverpool, with the regeneration of Anfield, a ground criticised recently for lacking atmosphere and Everton, set to become the first club to move away from Stanley Park, a shared connection between the pair since 1892. Paul MacInnes talks to lifelong supporters of both clubs to find out how they’re coping with the developments

Liverpool and Everton: rivals sharing in battle for soul of football | Paul MacInnes via The Guardian

Merseyside’s big two go head-to-head on Saturday but off the pitch there is a concern among both sets of fans about the ‘experience’ of following their respective sides
Earlier this year a video by RedMen TV went viral. It wasn’t the usual fan channel mixture of incandescence and impossible demands. Instead, a young Liverpool supporter made an almost poignant observation about what he felt was a subdued atmosphere and a disconnected Anfield crowd during a defeat against Southampton that saw his club knocked out of the EFL Cup. His summary of the experience was punchy: “It’s just like a tourist club now”.

Supporters of all clubs are used to changes in their matchday experience (the use of the phrase ‘matchday experience’ being one of them). The problems of being a ‘tourist club’, meanwhile, are perhaps only the concern of teams in the top half of the Premier League. But to hear it from a young fan of a club whose legend is so closely associated with the community from which it emerged, struck a nerve.

Merseyside derby: can Everton overcome hoodoo and will Coutinho shine? via The Guardian

Five things to look out for including how Liverpool will replace Lallana and Lukaku’s pursuit of the golden boot when the two old rivals meet at Anfield
Jürgen Klopp’s side triumphed without their influential No10 at Goodison Park in December but he remains pivotal to their prospects of breaking any defence and one of the few talents capable of elevating a derby with a touch of class. Since returning from an ankle ligament injury in January, Coutinho has recaptured his early-season form only sporadically and scored once in 13 outings for his club. However, his goal and performance for Brazil against Paraguay in midweek, when he helped his country to qualify for the World Cup in Russia before flying back to Merseyside on a private jet with Roberto Firmino, suggest his sharpness and confidence is returning.
