Ronald Koeman has reiterated the clubs desire to keep Romelu Lukaku at Everton.

Koeman: “If someone is interested for sure they will call the board and then we will speak about it but we will try to do everything to keep him at Everton next season.

“He has scored 24 goals and with five games to go he can reach a really high total,” said Koeman. “”It is like for any player who is performing at a high level – every team likes to have goalscorers in the team because goals make points for the team.

“But I think he is improving in the rest of his football. He is doing better pressing and running in the channels.

“He is now a better striker for the team than he was last year.

“I’ve had several conversations about how, in my opinion, he needs to play as a striker and he is working hard and improving”.

Ronald Koeman isn’t confident James McCarthy will play again this season, with the midfielder still working seperate of the group as he looks to recover from his latest injury.

Koeman: “He is still working separate of the group.

“There are four weeks to go and I don’t know if he will be at a good level physically to play- we will wait.

“It’s not the first time he’s been out. We need to see how he’s recovering and at what time he’ll be available I don’t know.”

There was better news on Mo Besic.

Koeman: “Mo will play his second game tomorrow for the u-23s (against Chelsea). He’s working very hard and is close to being back.”

Koeman sets Everton target to finish above Arsenal and Manchester United via The Guardian

• Dutchman says his team are more than capable of a top-five finish
• Rivals’ heavier workloads will be to Everton’s advantage, he adds
Ronald Koeman has said Everton could finish above Arsenal or Manchester United due to their rivals’ inconsistency and workloads, claiming the pair are bigger than his team in name only.

Leicester City’s elimination from the Champions League on Tuesday in effect secured Europa League qualification for Everton, with Koeman’s team seventh in the table and 13 points clear of West Bromwich Albion in eighth. Everton will face a third qualifying round in late July should they remain seventh but while welcoming a place in Europa and the extra demands on next season’s fixture schedule, Koeman insists a fifth- or sixth-placed finish is a credible target.
