Martinez: Everton can compete financially with anyone in the world via Royal Blue Mersey

Boss seeks to calm fears about impending Lukaku exit

Roberto Martinez, always one to dabble with a bit of hyperbole, has tried to soften the blow of Romelu Lukaku’s impending exit by making a bold claim about Everton’s finances.

Lukaku nudged a little further towards the exit door this week with comments from his dad, his agent and the striker himself all talking up a summer departure.

Martinez was inevitably quizzed about those rumours in his news conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Man Utd.

The Spaniard, unsurprisingly, refused to entertain talk of Lukaku’s seemingly impending exit. He did though try to put a positive spin on the transfer saga by highlighting Everton’s newfound financial muscle.

Farhad Moshiri’s arrival at Goodison Park means Everton will belatedly have the resources to compete in the transfer market.

Moshiri is unlikely to sanction a Sheikh Mansour-style spending spree, but the sell-to-buy policy most prevalent in the David Moyes era looks to finally be a thing of the past.

When asked whether the Lukaku rumours were unsettling the squad, Martinez said:

"It’s not unsettling at all because that should be the aspiration of everyone here, wanting to be best you can and be in the best competition.

"We have that at Everton; we want to be competing to win titles. We’ve been in one semi-final, now we’re in another.

We want a good momentum and players need to be part of it. We need ambitious players who can carry our expectations.

"We shouldn’t be afraid about losing players because financially we can compete against anyone in world football. Things have changed radically in that respect.

In the last six windows we have become stronger and have made a more talented squad. That’s what we are going to carry on doing. We will speak about individual situations at the end of the season but we should not fear losing anyone because we can compete financially against anyone. To play for Everton should be an honour and a privilege."

Anything Martinez says always has to be taken with a pinch of salt – don’t forget he is the man who labelled Gareth Barry one of England’s greatest ever players and claims Tom Cleverley is technically the best player in the country.

However, it does seem that Moshiri’s arrival means Everton will be able to go out and spend significantly in the transfer market.

We would all love for Lukaku to remain at Everton this summer but we all know the reality of the situation.

A fee in the region of £50-60m would ease the pain and allied with Moshiri’s funding there’s no reason why we can’t bring in three or four world-class players to ensure we begin next season with a stronger side even without Rom.

Martinez refuses to consider prospect of losing Lukaku via everton-mad

Everton boss Roberto Martinez refuses to consider the prospect of losing leading scorer Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

While on international duty, the Belgium striker dropped his biggest hint yet he was looking to leave Goodison Park at the end of the season.

"I'm 23 next summer and it would be nice to play in the Champions League next season," he said.

Lukaku's 25 goals this season have alerted a number of Europe's top clubs, with agent Mino Raiola this week openly talking about interest from Juventus, Paris St Germain and even Real Madrid.

Martinez insists financially the club can compete with the market's bigger players, although it is more likely footballing ambitions will decide Lukaku's fate with Everton out of the running for Champions League qualification, although they do have an FA Cup semi-final to look forward to.

"It is not unsettling at all because that should be the aspiration of everyone, wanting to be as good as you can and aspiring to be in the best competitions," said the Spaniard.

"We need ambitious players and players who can carry the expectations of our football club.

"At Everton we have that aspiration, we want to be in the Champions League, we were knocked out of the League Cup semi-final, we are now in an FA Cup semi-final and we want to continue that momentum.

"What we shouldn't be afraid of is losing players. We are in a position where financially we can compete with anyone in the world – things have changed radically in that respect.

"At this present time it doesn't really bother me what the individual situations will be in the summer.

"The reality is to play for Everton has to be an honour and a privilege.

"The only thing that matters now is the team's future.

"I'm looking at the talking he does on the pitch and the way he has been growing in confidence this season – that is all that matters."

Lukaku has more than justified his £28million club record transfer fee since his move from Chelsea and that is a source of satisfaction for Martinez.

The Belgian became the first Everton player since Gary Lineker 30 years ago to score 25 goals in a season.

"Three years ago we started working with him having made a huge investment and now you can see why we made that investment," he added.

"It is a real satisfaction he has grown into the player we expected him to be.

"When you make an investment and you sign a player who doesn't fulfil his potential, that is a worry for a manager.

"To have a player growing all the time and becoming one of the best talents in European football makes you extremely proud."

Blogger Q&A: Manchester United blog The Busby Babe via Royal Blue Mersey

GettyImages-471224708.0.jpg

We speak to our SBN counterparts.

With Everton taking on Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League, we spoke with Andi Thomas from SB Nation's Manchester United blog 'The Busby Babe' about what's been going on at Old Trafford.

RBM – For every star in the world of football, getting linked with United is almost a rite of passage. Who among that throng really interests you?

TBB – Well – with all due respect to the location of this Q&A – the Romelu Lukaku rumours make a lot of sense from United's perspective: there's a hole in the squad marked 'proper good striker' which he would fill perfectly. He could do better though, so I've no real optimism on that front.

Beyond him, who knows? One of the great burdens that we poor United fans have to bear is that there are so many rumours, about so many players, that so often turn out to be nonsense, that there's almost no value in getting even vaguely excited about any of them. You can spend ages inhaling Youtube clips and running newspaper reports through Google translate and scouring Twitter, only for it to turn out that all the player really wanted was a shiny new contract. It's a hard life, this. But we struggle on. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be fun.

RBM – What's the latest on the Jose Mourinho to Old Trafford saga? Is this really a done deal or is it all also tabloid fodder?

TBB – Speaking as somebody just about as far from ITK as it's possible to be, the general consensus seems to be that it's going to happen. Apart from anything else, the proposed alternatives are all fairly uninspiring: Giggs' only experience has been as assistant to two failed managers; Van Gaal means well but his teams don't play well; and it's very, very hard to imagine United's hierarchy plucking an appointment from leftfield. Ed Woodward wouldn't know Thomas Tuchel if he fell over him. That said, if Tottenham win the league he'll presumably make at least one undignified swipe at Mauricio Pochettino.

RBM – How, if at all, is this affecting Louis van Gaal and the players as they try to go about their regular business?

TBB – It's very hard to tell, because even when he was absolutely safe in his position and leading United on to a glorious oranje-tinted future, the team looked like a jittery mess. A personal suspicion is that now United are out of the Europa League the squad and the management will have resigned themselves to the fact that there will be change at the end of the season, and so from now everybody will be a bit more relaxed. Demob happy, even. Certainly the squad seemed quite composed against Manchester City. Though that might be thanks to Martin Demichelis.

RBM – With United just one point behind fourth-placed City, qualifying for the Champions League must be top priority at Old Trafford?

TBB – Correct. Well, top priority after acquiring new lubrication sponsors. And inflating the Glazers' bank balance. And inflating Wayne Rooney's bank balance. And naming parts of the stadium after irascible old knights of the realm. Realistically, though, if United qualify for the Champions League it will be because everybody else has bottled it in hilarious fashion. Not fourth best; seventeenth least-worst. We'd take it, obviously, not least for the sight of Pep "Pep" Guardiola in the Europa League. But I don't expect it.

RBM – Will van Gaal field a weakened side against West Ham (who are also in the UCL running) in the FA Cup quarter final replay?

TBB – The above notwithstanding, I wouldn't have thought so. The FA Cup represents Van Gaal's best chance of a trophy in the time remaining to him, and he does seem sincere in his affection for the old competition. In any case, how could you tell? Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson … the kids are the first team now. Maybe if Rooney makes his comeback, we'll know he's throwing the game.

RBM – United's famed youth system always seems to produce gems like Marcus Rashford. Who else do you have hidden back there?

TBB – Looking for a sneak preview of the new Darron Gibson, right? Well, there's Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who's made a couple of appearances for the first team already this season, and is rated pretty highly by people who know about these sorts of things. He seems comfortable with a football at his feet, can play in defence or midfield, and tackles like Nemanja Vidic with a persistent headache. All very pleasing.

Also of note are two more defenders: Regan Poole, a Welsh youth international who got on for the last minute against FC Midtjylland, and Axel Tuanzebe, who was Young Player of the Year last season. Oh, and Callum Gribbin. Nicky Butt rates him, and he's got an excellent name.
