Player profile – Jordan Pickford via GrandOldTeam

pickford-150x150.jpg

Standing at 6 ft 1, 23 years old, Sunderland born and bred, an England under 21 regular.

There’s a reason young Pickford has already been rewarded with his first call up to the senior national side.

Jordan found himself in the Sunderland net when first choice Vito Mannone picked up an injury.

And boy did he grab it with both hands.

He was without doubt the only man to come out of Sunderland’s abysmal relegation season with his head held high.

Don’t look too much into the meagre four clean sheets picked up Pickford.

A defence featuring players, if you can call them that, such as Bryan Oviedo, John O’Shea, Joleon Lescott and Billy Jones would make even the Manuel Neuer’s of this world struggle.

What he lacked in clean sheets was compensated in saves, 141 of them to be exact (finding himself second in the saves made charts, just one behind fellow England international Tom Heaton).

He’s got the shot stopping ability, and much more.

Pickford’s distribution is quality. His ability to find his man with a long punt up the field isn’t luck and this is something the Blues could use and abuse.

A secret weapon.

His frame – on the smaller size for a keeper – is nothing to turn your nose up at, the 43 claims Pickford produced throughout last campaign show he’s no slouch in the air.

Age on his side, the youngster has plenty of time to get better and better and better.

He really does have the potential to be Everton and England’s last line of defence for the next 10 to 15 years.

Don’t believe me? Well just look at what the greatest player to don the No1 shirt in the club’s history had to say about Everton’s rumoured to be £30 million man…

I think if we sign Pickford we have a bargain
What price saving 12 points a season
Potential to go all the way to world level

— Neville Southall (@NevilleSouthall) June 13, 2017

Not enough to sway you over?

England’s record cap holder and one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation, Peter Shilton, believes Pickford is “worth every penny”.

High praise from two of the beautiful game’s best.

Pickford is a top drawer ‘keeper with the world at his feet.

The man can go as far as he wants in the game and don’t let the reported fee put you off – trust Steve Walsh and Ronald Koeman. They know what they are doing.

Up the Toffees.

Listen: Jordan Pickford Interview with Sunderland fan via GrandOldTeam

ROKER-150x150.jpg

Adam is joined by Graham from Sunderland’s Roker Report to give us the Sunderland perspective on Jordan Pickford.

Graham: “He’s brilliant. He’s going to be world class and I mean that.

“Pretty much universally, fans are saying anything less than £30m is not enough, there’s still people now saying it’s not enough. He’s got the potential to be much better than what you’re paying for him. I know that’s hard to say for a goalkeeper that’s been relegated and played 20, 25 games in a season but honestly he’s probably the best talent that has come through our youth system and probably one of the best to come through any English clubs youth system. He’ll be England’s number one within six months.

“Great shot stopper, very vocal. I was at his debut, I thought he was going to be good. He’s better than I thought he was. He had people like John O’Shea, experienced professionals – he’s not afraid to bollock someone. He’s vocal, he’s aggressive – he’s cocky, in a good sense. He’s confident, he’s a good shot shopper. He makes the right balls. Unbelievable distribution”.

Gustavo Gomez via GrandOldTeam

gust-150x150.jpg

Everton are in talks with AC Milan over a potential transfer for Gustavo Gomez.

Everton have sent representatives including Director of Football Steve Walsh to discuss players from both AC and Inter Milan – multiple names have been suggested as transfer probabilities including M’Baye Niang and Gianluca Lapadula but Gustavo Gomez is reported to be a significant transfer target according to Calciomercato.

The Paraguay international, joined AC Milan in a £7m switch from Argentinian side CA Lanus last summer. When the transfer was completed, Lanus president Nicolas Russo was also quick to praise the centre-back, telling Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Football Italia):

“Without a shadow of a doubt he is ready for this step up. Gustavo is an extraordinary player, very strong and certainly ready to face this new adventure. His greatest strengths are in the air and in challenges. Gomez has a winning mentality and will be Milan’s first choice defender for the next 10 years. … I can confirm that Milan, Fiorentina and several Premier League clubs wanted him”.

Player profile – Davy Klaassen

 via GrandOldTeam

davy-150x150.jpg

A box-to-box creative midfielder who knows where the net is.

At only 24, Klaassen has just completed his second season as captain of Dutch giants Ajax.

Something really lacking in the Blues’ ranks is leaders, so the arrival of someone with Klaassen’s qualities will be welcomed in L4 with open arms.

An established Netherlands international, it’s easy to see what Ronald Koeman wants with this man – goals and assists from the middle of the park.

33 games in the 16/17 Eredivisie campaign.

14 goals.

9 assists.

An exceptional haul, 8 goals greater than Everton’s closest challenger to Romelu Lukaku.

The first player to lead Ajax out in a European final since Danny Blind in 1996, Klaassen clocked up more assists than anyone in the Everton side last term.

Only one season, you say?

Here’s a stat for you.

Klaassen has been directly involved in 43 goals in his last 63 league games for the famous Amsterdam club.

Koeman will be first to admit it but his greatest weakness in what was his first season in charge of the club was winning away games.

Klaassen is a professional who is the not afraid of leaving home comforts behind.

He finished as the leading away scorer in the league with a grand total of 11.

In what has been dark times in the history of a one time elite footballing nation, Klaassen has been a bright spark for Oranje in scoring four goals in 14 games.

With Ross Barkley’s future up in the air, Steve Walsh and Koeman feel like they’ve identified the perfect player to replace Ross.

Davy is someone who knows how to win a trophy, with three league titles already – and he won the 2016 Dutch footballer of the year award.

Here’s to hoping he can bring his much needed winning mentality with him.

Up the Toffees.

Confirmed: Everton Sign Jordan Pickford via GrandOldTeam

pickford2-150x150.jpg

Jordan Pickford says he is ready for an “exciting time” for him and for Everton after signing a five-year deal with the Blues for a Club-record fee.

The highly-rated goalkeeper has moved to Goodison Park from Sunderland after the first and only negotiations commenced between Everton and the north east club last weekend. A deal was agreed quickly and harmoniously, enabling talks to then begin with the player.

The £25m fee for the 23-year-old could rise to £30m depending on team and individual performances – a British record and third highest fee in the world for any player in that position.

Pickford, who has represented England at every level from Under-16s to Under-21s and received his first call-up to the senior squad in October, was shortlisted for PFA Young Player of the Year last season despite Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League.

The keeper revealed he was looking forward to getting started at “massive club” Everton – and boosting the Blues with “match-winning saves”.

Speaking to evertonfc.com while on England Under-21 duty in Poland ahead of the European Championships, he said: “It’s great to sign for the Club. Last season was my first in the Premier League so to get this opportunity with Everton now, to be able to go forward with my career and show everyone what I can do with Everton is unbelievable.

“It’s a great club, a massive club and I think it’s a great opportunity and the right time for me to come to Everton and show what I can do.

“This is an exciting time for the Club and for me, too, with the ambition being shown. I just want to be the best I can be to help.

“I know Mason (Holgate – his England Under-21 teammate) and a few of the other lads at Everton from younger age groups and the Club’s only going forward, so it’s the best thing I can be doing.

“I remember playing (at Everton) on my first game back from injury last season for Sunderland. When I came out for the second half the fans gave me a clap and applauded then so I can’t wait to get out there on the pitch at Goodison.

“I’ve just got to show people what I can do, keep training and working hard and when it comes to game day, produce what I can do – making match-winning saves, showing what my distribution is like and making the right saves at the right times.”

Pickford admitted he was looking forward to working with Ronald Koeman, and the Toffees manager spoke of the importance of signing the Sunderland Academy graduate.

“I’m really pleased we’ve made what I’m sure will be a significant signing for Everton Football Club,” said the Dutchman.

“Jordan is a very talented young professional who also has a real hunger for success, and that’s important for us as we now look to make further progress in the seasons ahead.

“We’ve seen the quality he has through his performances in the Premier League last season and, given his young age, we’re sure he will get even better. I’m looking forward to welcoming Jordan to the group next month and wish him every success with the England Under-21 squad in Poland.”

Pickford, who made his first-team debut for Sunderland in January 2016, hopes joining Everton can help him break into the senior England team next season. But first he is looking forward to tasting European football as the Blues prepare for the start of their Europa League campaign on 27 July.

“It will be a great experience, (with me) only being young, but it’s another test for me and I feel ready for it,” added the shot-stopper. “The Europa League will be a big tournament, as well.

“I’ve got the Under-21s tournament now, which is massive for me and the group of lads I’m with. Hopefully I can be the best I can be and it can put me in good stead for next season to try to get into the senior team.”
