Everton boss Roberto Martinez looking for Premier League boost against Watford via everton-mad

Roberto Martinez hopes it is Everton rather than Watford that can emerge from their Barclays Premier League slump when the two FA Cup semi-finalists meet at Vicarage Road.

Involvement in the latter stages of the cup has brought the league campaigns of both teams to a grinding halt, with Everton losing their last three matches and Watford their last four.

Coincidentally, Everton's next league game after Watford is against the Hornets' FA Cup opponents Crystal Palace, who have not won a league game in 2016.

Toffees boss Martinez said: " You can work on every aspect of the game, and every technicality, but confidence comes with achieving good results and feeling good about yourself

"It's something we need to regain with a good performance and getting back to winning ways
It's as simple as that
We need to simplify it

"We should forget about the semi-final
Every team that got through to the semi-finals, they haven't won a game in the league

"That's probably something that happens when you reach a real high, it's difficult to reach the same level in the next few games
That's why we need to control the level of performance in the game against Watford

"They are in a similar situation
First and foremost I think Watford have had an outstanding season.

"We faced them in the opening game of the campaign, they surprised us with how quickly they got into the tempo of the Premier League, how well organised Quique Sanchez Flores had the team, the partnership that has been so successful playing up front, and I think they are not a surprise any more.

"What they are doing in the cup is probably what makes it a really interesting game
Both sides are desperate to get the form into the league."

Watford were challenging for the European spots not long ago but a run of only two wins in 10 league games has seen them slide to 14th, two places and one point below Everton.

But the Hornets had overachieved and their priority for the season, safety, has surely already been secured.

It is a different story for Everton, with fans growing increasingly angry about results, particularly at home, and frustrated by Martinez's relentless positivity.

The Spaniard is expected to select Leighton Baines for Saturday's match after the full-back apologised for saying Everton lacked chemistry.

Martinez insisted Baines' words had been misinterpreted and there is no problem within the squad.

Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar are both doubtful after missing last weekend's defeat by Manchester United with knocks but fellow midfielder Gareth Barry returns from suspension.

Martinez will hope the veteran's presence can inspire Everton to a change in fortune, and the Spaniard said: " Gareth is one of those footballers that you really miss when he's not there

"He's such a consistent performer, someone that is prepared to do all those jobs that allow the team to be balanced and allow the huge attributes to show."

Everton head south to Vicarage road where they face off against Watford FC

Everton's jam-packed and difficult month keeps on rolling as the team travel to Vicarage Road to take on Watford. Roberto Martinez and company will look to stop the Hornets from leaping ahead of them in the table as the two sides only sit one point apart in the standings.

Disappointing losses and subsequent drama seem to follow the team like a shadow as of late. An uninspired performance at Old Trafford was followed by Leighton Baines controversial yet refreshing comments regarding the lack of chemistry within the squad. Despite Martinez's assertion to the contrary, that Baines was misinterpreted, there are clearly some serious issues in the Everton dressing room.

The Opposition

If ever there was a game that Everton can and should win, it would be this match against Watford. The Hornets' early season from has dropped off significantly as of late along with the scoring of Odion Ighalo. The Nigerian striker had looked like an early season favorite to win the Golden Boot, but recently both he and the team have found goals hard to come by.

Like Everton, Watford appear to be hinging the disappointing second half of their season on the FA Cup. Watford have also made the semi-finals and will face Crystal Palace for a spot in the Final the day after Everton take on either West Ham or Manchester United. If all goes well, we could be seeing a rematch of the two teams come May.

Team news

Everton continue to remain relatively injury free and will be boosted by the return of Gareth Barry. Barry will no doubt slide back into the defensive midfield role and provide the cover that the squad have been lacking recently.

Watford have fared even better in the injury department and appear to have no injuries of note. Expect a full-strength line up from Quique Flores' men.

The Final Word

This is a game Everton need to win and realistically should win. Despite their struggles, they are facing a team that is struggling just as much, if not more.

What I'm really hoping for is that Roberto Martinez does not put out one of his patented crazy, out of position, line-ups on the pitch.

Predicted Starting XI: Robles, Baines, Stones, Jagielka, Coleman, Barry, McCarthy, Cleverley, Barkley, Lennon, Lukaku

Everton at Watford 2016: Live stream, start time, TV schedule and how to watch online via Royal Blue Mersey

The Toffees are in a streak of especially poor form in this poor season. They now face Watford, a team they drew 2-2 with on the opening weekend of the season back in August.

It is a matchup of the 12th- and 14th-place teams in the Premier League as Everton travel to Vicarage road to take on Watford. The two teams have quite different outlooks now when compared to their first meeting of the season back in the beginning of August.

Watford, thought to be a candidate for demotion, has played an exciting brand of football that has seen Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney team up to form a fierce-some pair on attack. The Hornets should comfortably return to England's top league next season.

Everton. Well, you know about Everton at this point. They have been a disappointment and, even if they manage to take home the FA Cup, this season is likely still a failure. Quotes from left back Leighton Baines earlier this week indicate a fracture in the dressing room. Who is to blame? It will fall on the head of manager Roberto Martinez, who may be headed back to Spain anyway.

Many of the players on the roster would seem to have European aspirations. That means playing meaningful games each week; not simply drawing out the string in mid-April. This game is, in a sense, pointless. The Toffees are in no danger of being dropped to the Championship. But they are no where near good enough to compete for much of anything. Rumors persist that Romelu Lukaku is headed out the door in the summer, and who could blame him? There is talk that Alexandre Lacazette may come in as a replacement, but it's still early.

Ah well. That's the life of a Blues supporter right now. Perhaps three points today can mask the pain for a little while at least.

Everton at Watford: Roberto Martinez Pre-Match Quotes via Royal Blue Mersey

“We need to forget about the semi-final” says Roberto Martinez

With the league form disintegrating and a brutal but honest assessment by Leighton Baines, all seems gloomy at Everton at the moment which makes any word from the manager even further under the microscope. Roberto Martinez sat down with the assembled media Thursday morning to preview the Toffees' trip to Watford.

"We need to forget about the semi-final," said the gaffer. "When you reach a real high then it's difficult to reach the same level. We are going to be obsessed with the games we have ahead.

"We know the quality we have. Clearly the disappointment is there because the standards are so high. We feel we can perform against anyone."

In terms of team news for Saturday's clash the Spaniard said,

"Gareth Barry has been missed – both in what he brings as a footballer and a leader."

He continued, "He’s someone people can look up to, someone who is a reference and someone understands what the team needs in certain moments of a game.

"Leon Osman picked up a knock that kept out of the squad to face Manchester United – the same as Steven Pienaar, but Steven will be training today so apart from that it should be the same squad as last week."

But the focus of the press conference was more on Martinez's response to Baines' comments,

"It is very disappointing when you see a misinterpretation of a player’s words, and clearly this has taken out of context.

"I've had a chat with him and he knows he has to take responsibility for leaving those words open. He has put himself in a position where he has given the wrong words."

More from Martinez's comments regarding Baines here.
