Skipper ruled out, Cleverley rated 50-50 but Barkley fit

It is an extremely different situation to the build-up of Everton's trip to Crystal Palace to when the Eagles made the opposite journey following the Blues' dominating win over Arsenal to put themselves in pole position to finish fourth two season ago. Back then manager Roberto Martinez had nearly 40,000 Toffees singing about him 'having a dream' – present day there are as many calling for his head.

Martinez and his side will be heading down to Selhurst Park without captain Phil Jagielka at their disposal following the defender suffering a hamstring injury in the draw at Watford. Another casualty from that game was Tom Cleverley; who is being rated 50-50 to be fit enough for Wednesday after getting a knock. Ross Barkley came off with a knee injury during the game at Vicarage Road but is still expected to start. Both Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar are reported to have 'knocks' and remain doubtful.

The hosts are without Brede Hangeland and Marouane Chamakh with a knock and groin injury, respectively. Emmanuel Adebayor also has a knock and is ruled out of the clash. Another out for Alan Pardew's side is James McArthur, who has been on the treatment table with an ankle and foot injury.

Everton at Crystal Palace: Roberto Martinez Pre-Match Quotes via Royal Blue Mersey

"There is no such thing as blame" – says under fire gaffer

After having a 'Martinez Out' banner make its debut at Watford, an under pressure Roberto Martinez sat with the assembled media personal to preview Everton's trip to Crystal Palace.

"There is no such thing as blame," exclaimed Martinez when asked if he could put his finger on the club's inconsistent league form.

"We constantly look to improve every single day. We have a lot of young players who are learning all of the time.

"We are a football club with incredibly high standards and we want to fulfil those.

"We've put a lot of work in to assemble this squad, a squad that breeds excitement and incredible potential, but the reality is that we've been really good in some aspects and really poor in other.

"We haven't been able to manage games well enough," he continued, "we haven't conserved leads, we've thrown really good positions away and it's been reflected in the score lines. Clearly we need to get better."

"Our consistency away from home hasn't been repeated at home."

"The home results haven't been good enough. You have to be consistent with your results over 10 months and we've managed to do that away from home but not at Goodison.

"I think every Everton fan that has seen us week in, week out at home knows that we probably haven't got the points that we have deserved but that's something that we have to address and improve on."

So Roberto 'blames' game management and home form, but what can we expect for the remainder of the season?

"I accept the only thing that matters is to make sure we finish season really, really strong. Everything is to fight for in league campaign," said the Spaniard.

"The only thing that matters is preparing for the game tomorrow, moving on and developing a really good momentum for the rest of the season. I don't think anyone can think about that game just yet.

"It's not about setting targets at this point. We have to fight for every point we've got left to fight for."

Away from home, there was a report Tuesday morning that Argentina would look to select centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori for their squad for this summer's Olympics.

In response, his club manager said;

"At the moment we need to find a bit more clarity. I had two conversations with the Argentinian manager Tata Martino and there is an interest in trying to make Ramiro one of the over 23 players for the Olympics.

"We need to find out a bit more and see where we are at the end of the season because there is the Copa America as well.

"I haven't spoken with the player about it just yet. As you can imagine the focus at this present time is the team and the games we have in this period. We will have time at the end of the season to look into that possibility."

Focusing back on Wednesday's clash, Roberto gave us some team news, "With Phil Jagielka the scan has revealed he is going to miss tomorrow's game and miss the game at the weekend against Southampton."

"At that point we will have to assess it on a daily basis. It is such a congested fixture list that it would be dangerous to give a date on when he will be back."

"It is too early to make an assessment for the semi-final. Phil is always a quick healer and we will see how the treatment affects his recovery. We will have a better idea on Monday or Tuesday next week."

"I don't think Tom Cleverley is going to be a long-term problem but at the moment he's quite doubtful for tomorrow.

"I expect Ross [Barkley] to be fit and available."

The duo face stern competition from stars from Tottenham, Liverpool and Stoke for the award.

Everton duo Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku have been named on the list of players in contention for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

The Blues duo have been in impressive form this season, despite the Blues' struggles in the Premier League.

Lukaku in particular has caught the eye, with an impressive 25 goals so far in all competitions, 18 of which have came in the Premier League.

That tally leaves him third on top scorers list in the division, as he competes for the Golden Boot against Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy of Leicester City.

In contrast, Barkley has managed 12 goals in all competitions this season, with eight of those coming in the Premier League, leaving him as the club's second highest goalscorer this season.

Their performances have not gone unnoticed either, with both named on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist.

They face stern competition to win it though, with Kane and Spurs teammate Dele Alli, Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho and Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland also in contention for the award.

Roberto Martinez- Everton are hitting their stride in time for FA Cup semi-final via everton-mad

Roberto Martinez spoke of his optimism surrounding Everton's FA Cup semi-final with Manchester United after believing his team had demonstrated crucial progress in their 0-0 Premier League draw at Crystal Palace.

Everton had to play with 10 men after James McCarthy was shown a second yellow card seven minutes into the second period, but amid intense pressure they remained resilient and earned what was ultimately an impressive point and clean sheet.

United's 2-1 win in their quarter-final replay at West Ham earlier in the evening ensured they would face Everton at Wembley on April 23, but despite his team's disappointing 1-0 league defeat at Old Trafford earlier this month and the defensive lapses that have ruined their pursuit of a top-six finish, Martinez was adamant their performance against Palace proved that this time they will be "ready" for United.

"That resilience we had to show," said the Spaniard
"But that's not enough on its own, you need tactical awareness as well, and we showed that
We were very clear in what we wanted to do, and then it's about managing the game to allow us our threat as well.

"I'm very pleased to keep a clean sheet and to manage the game in that way is perfect timing
It's great to see we're learning from our hard lessons
Probably, the timing of this performance is perfect

"It all matters in the final weeks of the campaign
We've lost too many points late on
It's now you want to hit your top level
You want to shine in the last few weeks of the season.

"To play a semi-final of the FA Cup against Manchester United at Wembley is as good as it gets
We'll enjoy it and will be ready.

"It's the same weekend 50 years ago that Colin Harvey became a hero by scoring the winning goal in the semi-final of the FA Cup (against United)
Maybe that's a sign of something to come, but it will be terrific to be able to have one of our players writing new history."

Asked of McCarthy's two bookings- the first for a foul on Yohan Cabaye and the second for a block on Yannick Bolasie – Martinez replied: "I thought James McCarthy was trying to stop Yannick Bolasie getting to the ball.

"Watching the replay, I was mistaken
I don't think it's a yellow card whatsoever
I think James McCarthy comes across to cover and stops, stands still, and the Crystal Palace player encourages the contact
I thought it was a very harsh second yellow card."

The draw took fellow cup semi-finalists Palace to 38 points for the season and manager Alan Pardew believes his team are now safe.

"I don't think it's possible for the others to catch us now," he said
"Connor (Wickham) looked like a player who's been injured – he needed that game – and (Emmanuel) Adebayor did well when he came on
So there are positives."
