Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

The squad was too big anyway. It needed trimming down.
Indeed, and it's something people have called to happen for years, so we've now removed quite a significant amount of wages from the books.

How many out of those seven will actually be missed? Not many. Unfortunately, the issue now is that what we're left with needs adding to and revitalising.

However, we're still in a financial position and most of these players were released rather than sold, which means we're struggling to do that.

If we get an injury or two, which will inevitably happen, we're up a certain creek without a paddle to our name.

A huge amount of it is how the players who are here want to apply themselves.

If they play at the level we did for most of the run in, we won’t have a problem next season. Play like we did any other time and we’re in dire straits. Even the losses against West Ham and Burnley in the run in were miles better application wise from the players than some of the stuff we saw earlier on in the season and at the start of Frank’s time.

A lot of these players just need to work harder. If Iwobi and Dele both brought their best form into the start of next season we’d be wondering why we were all worried about creativity. Instead though we’re all pretty much expecting the pair of them to drift through games offering barely anything. Same with Gomes Doucoure sometimes Gray too.

5 CB’s is fine considering we are likely to play 3 at the back.

According to transfermarkt we have a squad of 24 (it’s missing Lonergan) but that includes none of the kids. 24 inc 3 keepers is the maximum we need.
If we go with any 3 CB formation, be it a back 5 or anything with wingbacks slightly advanced of 3 CBs we will be rock bottom of the table by end of September. We don't have the quality of midfielders necessary to deploy just 2 CMs, nor do we have the depth or quality of CFs to play with two up front. We also don't have the wiggle room to buy players of the quality necessary to make a 523 or a 532 work.

I would genuinely fear that we'd lose eight of the first ten games.

We definitely need to get rid of however many players come in. Gomes, Gbamin and Nkonkou are the most likely candidates.
Gomes and Keane.

Gbamin has a higher book value than either of them so will be harder to sell without making a loss.

Nkonkou is our only LB cover. Once one of Keane or Mina leaves (and financially it would be suicidal for the club to keep both on their current deals), Godfrey will be used as CB cover. So Nkounkou will back up Myko.

I think Gbamin and Nkonkou will be loaned out myself.

Frank’s experiment with 4 at the back against Minnesota will have put him off that formation for a long time.

I get that Lampard will be very frustrated by the lack of transfers at this point, and we’re clearly trying to make a little stretch a long way. But why on Earth are we not looking abroad for solutions? It’s absolutely baffling. Aside from a link to Onana who we clearly couldn’t afford, there’s only been a tenuous link to young Vranckx. I refuse to believe there aren’t decent players in Europe we’re completely ignoring. Is it seriously better to end up with Barkley on loan or paying for Dendoncker?

Godfrey is LB cover too.
