I think there’s something in this.

The season we finished 4th, we brought in Tim Cahill (Championship player at a cost of £2m), Marcus Bent (cost less than half a million). You won’t see two players in a blue shirt work harder than those two.

Added in Mikel Arteta on loan from Real Sociedad (not many knew he was at the time!) to go with the likes of Kevin Kilbane, Steve Watson, Gary Naysmith, Lee Carsley, etc.

Not a “big name” among them, but what a team. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

It’s not Andy Gray apparently...Demerai from Leicester is the rooster in question. I have to say, I always thought Andy Gray was a bit unlikely...he’s too old

As a player (not compared to who you might like to sign / think you should be signing)
Honest, hardworking grafter, full of energy (although not as quick as he was) good crosser, gets up and down and does his job defensively.
I would prefer to keep him. We seem to be ditching him and going after Lookman who seems to have none of the qualities above.
You will get more out of him than Barnard and he will be a positive influence around the place.
Not one for the future but will do a job for you for a couple of seasons.
Some of the comments about him on this thread are laughable.

Andros Townsend, if an honest if it’s replacement for Bernard, less wages, probably more effective then Bernard. Sound - not the signing I want but lower cost squad player.

Demerai Gray, am actually sound with, I thought he was an exciting player at LCFC and just didn’t seem to get going and keep a place in the side. Pace, skill and direct. If he comes in and settles then fine.

Begovic, Meh. Not really bothered - same when Olsen came in. Would prefer someone a bit better to push Pickford, but if he’s sorted his head out Begovic will be a decent backup.

end of the day if we getting 3 decent squad players for the cost of Bernards wages, I actually can’t argue, specially if they are an upgrade on other squad players.

Any transfers we make are a far less accurate barometer of Everton's state as a club than the quality and reliability of the pre-season video streams. Will this be the year steps are finally taken to see the club function like a serious outfit? We'll have to wait and see on that one.

Always seemed a short term deal though, and he has a 2M release clause apparently
