I was thinking about Rooney as I asked the question.
The difference I think is that Rooney was in and out of Everton before he could early leave a lasting legacy at the club.

Grealish has been huge for Villa and certainly Villa seem to have spent the money well, albeit I think paying hugely over the odds for Ings.
I think losing a player like that impacts a club
