It's a very different question to answer, but having Lukaku and Barkley back then made a big difference. I still think we had Baines and Coleman then as well.

Well Lukaku is better than DCL but least Dom hit 20. Rodriguez is about 8x better than Barkley was.

Going down the list, through positions, squad for squad, that one was worse.

Ultimately squad improvement is relative to the competition.

If Evertons squad improves slightly but Leicester, Aston Villa, West Ham etc. also improve but on a greater scale then Brands isn't doing a good enough job.

Sadly for him he's in a competition with 19 rivals not just Steve Walsh.

The problem is he's director of football not director of transfers and the football has, rather incredibly when you consider where we were when he came on, gotten worse.

It's not about specific deals as much as lining everything up top to bottom at the club and that we haven't done

Oh agree with that it's dysfunction throughout. But I would be amazed if we haven't been working on deals regardless of the manager situation.

I'd argue we do have plans but Carlo walking has thrown them all out of the window.

Then that's not really "plans", is it? The whole point is to plan for long term regardless of who the manager is. Brands' job is absolutely useless if he doesn't even do that part.

Then what is the point of Brands? Isn't his role to decide the playing strategy? It shouldn't make any difference who the manager is.

Well, if I was a player I wouldn't be signing for a midtable English club without a clue who the manager is and therefore get some assurances over whether they'd want to play me or not.
