Of all years mate, and with the benefit of hindsight, this is the one that was never going to have gone smoothly, as we sacked our last manager far too late in my opinion. We only started building the new foundations in June when we should have been planning this back in March/April.
Firstly we had to get the new manager, coaching staff and DOF in place. None of the people the board wanted were readily available so we had protracted negotiations and compensation to manage before getting our targets. But the reactions from the incumbent clubs and their fans gives me massive encouragement that the board have "got it right" with their selection process.
Secondly, in my opinion (and I'm definitely not ITK) the boards aim is for immediate success on the pitch, and by that I mean a proper challenge for top 4. At the moment we probably have 5/6 players that are top 4 quality, and one of them is likely to leave to conveniently bridge the salary increase deficiencies. The type of player we are after are UCL quality, but it is proving difficult to attract them to a club that doesn't offer any European football at all, and indeed finished bottom half in each of the last 2 seasons.
The question to ask ourselves is whether the board is being too ambitious and should it be aiming to build more slowly to UCL status, concentrating on buying second tier players and younger players with potential. I personally welcome the ambition and a speedy return to the halcyon days of the past when we were a club top players wanted to play for.
Finally, the Euro's has also undoubtedly had an impact with the inevitable delays in players returning to their clubs. A small number of high profile transfers appear to be holding up the market at the moment, and once these happen I believe you will see a huge knock on effect in the market.
I further believe that the transfer funds are there, we've just been unable, so far, to attract the quality of player we are after. I hope that will change and I trust in our new owner to do his utmost to make that happen. I suspect it's more likely to happen in the last week of August once the elite clubs take stock of their squads and some top quality players become available, possibly on loan initially. In any event I expect, come September 1st, our squad to be much improved on last year, both in quality and balance, not to mention depth with the influx of our exciting youth players. Combine this with a much improved coach and better fitness levels (which can already be noticed in pre-season) and I think we're in for a fantastic season ahead.
But in the meantime, we fans need to understand that it will not be easy and we need to have more patience and not fume every time we see some paper speculation not come to fruition. The alternative is to go after the second tier players, who we will no doubt sign the dotted line immediately, but will not be of the calibre to match our boards (and, I would hope, the majority of our fans) ambitions.
