Yeh I meant to put USSR, obviously since that broke apart they haven't been.

And is that takeover story 7 weeks old? Pretty sure it was just prior to Christmas news broke?

Yep, the season Lille won Ligue 1 for the first time (of I think two years running) we scouted him excessively. IIRC it would've been the 09/10 season.

Ukrainian is more of a different dialect than it is a different language i.e. a Ukrainian would have no problem understanding a Russian and vice versa. It's not like the difference between Spanish and Catalonian.

Ukraine is obviously not part of Russia but like Belarus large swathes of the population are 'ethnically Russian' - around 20% of the population of the country.

I get what you mean about it being ignorant to think Ukraine is actually part of Russia but it's pretty similar to what we see closer to home. While Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain there are quite a lot of people who live there that choose to hold an Irish passport as opposed to a British passport (as they have this option). None of this negates the fact that Ukraine is a separate country to Russia but I think what the OP is getting at is that a large proportion of the population consider themselves to be Russian in much the same way as many Northern Irish residents consider themselves to be Irish as opposed to British.

Yeah it's not that old, you can see at the beginning of the takeover thread the first post says the Times broke the story 24 hours ago and that was on 23rd December. So it's about 3 weeks old.
