The mental gymnasitics going on here.

Ffs can you imagine if Benitez played this team.

Coleman, Keane, no Patterson
5 at the back
2 in midfield
No youth players

He’d be getting absolutely destroyed.

Lampard does it and it’s a 343 formation and suddenly we don’t have any midfielders (so Gbamin and Onyango have gone from being options to not good enough in a few days?)

The hypocrisy is laughable.

The options available to the manager are just as bad as they were before which is probably why he’s ended up picking a very similar team.
Agree but we havent seen lampard have a game we knew the style benitez would play with 5. Lete see if it is today with a 5 and see how the team sets up was no width at all under benitez it was 5 at the back was no wb.

The crowd should be vocal with the positivity of our new Manager and player's eager to impress.

I'm thinking that at least could get us over the line.

With an important League game upcoming midweek, injured and Cup tied players the selection is understandable (would've liked to see Patterson start but maybe he's not ready). I'm not 100% on what the formation will be.

I could see a fair few goals in this game. Important thing is we win.

It might not be a back five, Holgate or Godfrey could be playing midfield with Gordon pushed up forward with Gray and Richarlison

Could be. I can’t see Godfrey being good enough on the ball in midfield. Holgate has done it before but varies between passable in possession and completely woeful. Says a lot of he’d be getting in ahead of Gbamin or Onyango in that position.

Just laughable the hypocrisy on here. Suddenly five defenders on the team sheet is a back three when a fortnight ago it was a back 5.

It just proves the point I was making all along there’s only so many viable solutions in this squad.
I suppose we'll have to wait and see how it plays out. With our former manager, this would definitely be a 5 man defence, because, he didn't want the team to have possession of the ball. We may well find today that either, Holgate is anchoring midfield with a back 4, or we may play Mykelenko and Godfrey as genuine wing backs in a 5.

We really won't know untill the game starts.

He probably feels Onyango is too raw, I’d have liked to see Gbamin given a chance though
