I once worked with and played football with a Manc who used to refer to me (jokingly) as a "scouse b*stard". When I pointed out to him that I am not a scouser nor even English the reply was "yeah but you support one of their teams don't you." He used to go on about "coming down the Mersey, nicking our jobs and our women." It was partly tongue in cheek like, but it confirmed to me how much they actually hate scousers as people and that it is not just about rivalry between football clubs.

I've hated United ever since.

I've lived in Wigan since 1973, played cricket here until the late 1990s, am an honorary member of the cricket club, but still, at least once a week, someone makes a joke AT me about stealing hub caps(what?), and generally being 'dodgy'. Just ignore it. Joke back at them and you'll find they can't take it like you can.
