Match Thread Everton v Newcastle United - Postponed

looking at newcastle's first team squad on their official site - https://www.nufc.co.uk/teams/first-team/

and using transfermark to find out their current injury / suspension / covid problems - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/sperrenundverletzungen/verein/762

I have worked out that subject to them having had further covid problems that has not been reported publicly they should have the following players available: -

GK - Dubravka, Gillespie, Langley, Woodman
Defenders - Schar, Lascelles, Krafth
Midfielders - Shelvey, Hayden, Hendrick, Fraser, Murphy, Almiron, Longstaff, Anderson
Forwards - Joelinton, Gayle

Total Number - 17
Total Outfielders - 13

There appears to be no official word whether Schar and Fraser were injured in the man utd match. Schar played the full 90 minutes and Fraser came off in the 75th minute

Lets give them the benefit of the doubt and they are injured that leaves

Total Number - 15
Total Outfielders - 11

now on the prem website they have listed White as a first team player but he's not on newcastle's first team list on their site, he was also named as a substitute in the man utd game

Total Number - 16
Total Outfielders - 12

so what do the prem rules state:-

"clubs were told no postponements would be permitted where 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper from the squad list were available."

If fewer than that are available, ‘appropriately experienced Under 21s’ must be used to reach that number. Any Under 21 player who has started a first-team match in the current or preceding season will be eligible.

So what appropriate experienced under 21's do Newcastle have? Well a look at their Under 23's squad reveal that they haven't got any players who have started a first team match this season or last season. Most of them only have academy football experience. You could even argue that White should not be included as an outfield player as he has no first team experience. They have got some highly rated youngsters like remi savage, callum ferguson (yes Big Dunc's son), Charlie Wiggett and a loan player called Santiago Munoz but none of them have first team experience or even loan experience at lower league sides in their first team.

So if we exclude White, Schar and Fraser that still leaves Newcastle with

Total Number - 15
Total Outfielders - 11

Those outfielders are: - Lascelles, Krafth, Shelvey, Hayden, Hendrick, Murphy, Almiron, Longstaff, Anderson, Joelinton and Gayle

So it looks like Newcastle are short by 2 outfielders IF you exclude Schar, Fraser and White

What i find curious is that Newcastle didn't have to name White on the bench for Man Utd, he is 19 year old academy player with no first team experience

if they named White on the bench then logically you could argue that they could name Wiggett, Munoz, Savage and Ferguson on the bench

the problem is the prem rules do not mention anything about academy players

if the prem simply stated that you have to include your academy players i.e. under 23 players then there would be no issues with postponements at all because newcastle have 17 academy players

If Schar and Fraser are not injured then Newcastle have 13 outfield players with first team experience which means a first team player must have contracted Covid

We did exactly the same thing the other day.

Newcastle only named 8 subs (including 2 GKs) the other day due to three COVID cases.

I'm not saying it's right, but Everton fans were all up in arms when the PL initially refused to postpone the Burnley game. Well we can't really moan about this I don't think.
Not all Everton fans.
I certainly wasn’t happy we postponed.
I said at the time it represented sharp practice by us.
The system is open to abuse and it is now being abused by a number of clubs to the detriment of match going supporters.

then again we have about 10 players available so that's also to the detriment of match going supporters

I don't think our injury situation will even have improved much by the time of the Brighton game but at least we'll have the COVID players back

Neither this, Burnley or Leicester should have been postponed but the prem have allowed teams to take the p!ss so they may as well if they think postponing is in their interest.

I am sceptical as to whether we had only had 10 players to call on to be honest and suspect , as with other clubs , we manipulated the COVID figures to allow us to cope with more conventional injuries , which is gamesmanship pure and simple.
As I’ve previously stated the situation could be simply resolved by ensuring that players who are claimed to have contracted COVID are independently tested to verify their status.
Also the larger societal issue is the need to reduce isolation periods in general.
Allied with vaccines we will have learn to live and cope better with the continued presence of this virus.

this is all became now one big joke , The same managers that is crying now about injuries and not having enough players will cry later on about playing too many games at the short amount of time
All in all we have had a mid winter break, something many coaches and players have been after for some time... Hook or crook they got what they wanted, never waste a good opportunity!

I doubt we manipulated the Covid numbers, but could easily have manipulated the ‘injured’ numbers.

I think our team v Brighton is absolutely anybody’s guess at this point.

That's the thing mate, we benefited from our games against Burnley and Leicester being postponed and loads were happy about it, we can't then whinge when we then have to fit those games into our schedule.

I just pray Sunday goes ahead, heard no talk that it is in danger so fingers crossed
