Just like to take this opportunity to wish any Wigan fans attending the match a safe journey to and from Goodison. I also hope it's the most miserable football experience of your lives. COYB

Howard out with broken bones

Tim Howard has been ruled out of the FA Cup quarter-final after David Moyes revealed that the American has fractured two bones in his back.

Howard sustained the injury against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup fifth round replay 10 days ago.

Jan Mucha made his Premier League debut in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Reading and the Slovakian international will continue in goal against Wigan Athletic.

Moyes said: “Tim is out against Wigan. He has broken two bones in his back. We don't think he will be out for the season. I read that (Newcastle's Fabricio) Coloccini could be out for seven weeks (with a similar injury) but we are not sure how long Tim will be out for because, obviously with a goalkeeper, he has to dive around and hit the ground.

"I have let him go away for a few days. It might be that, if everything goes well, he misses next week's game as well [against Manchester City] and then because of the international break he might be close after the rest because that would be four weeks.

"He has two fractures, but they are not bones that are supporting anything. It is off the spine. They are not weight-bearing. It just needs a bit of healing time. It is not like a pure fracture where you need to wait to look at it. It is a question of whether he can cope with the pain. The bones will heal themselves but it's not good."

Howard will be joined on the sidelines by Phil Jagielka, who was forced off last weekend against Reading with a gashed foot.

While confirming Jagielka won't play this weekend, Moyes remains hopeful that he will return soon.

"We think it won’t be too long before he is back," the manager said at his Friday press conference. "Hopefully we get him back quite quickly.”

Tony Hibbert remains a long term injury absentee as he recovers from calf surgery.

Everton's Tim Howard breaks two bones in back

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard faces a spell on the sidelines after fracturing two bones in his back.

The 34-year-old American suffered the injury in the FA Cup fifth round replay against Oldham 11 days ago.

His manager David Moyes thinks Howard will be out for around four weeks.

Slovakia international Jan Mucha, who made his Premier League debut last weekend in a 3-1 win over Reading, will again deputise against Wigan in Saturday's first FA Cup quarter-final.
The end of Tim Howard's run

Goalkeeper Tim Howard's run of 210 consecutive Premier League games ended last weekend when he missed Everton's win against Reading.

The United States international had played in every league match for Everton in the last five-and-a-half-years, since 30 September 2007

"Tim is out against Wigan. He has broken two bones in his back," Moyes told the club website.

"We don't think he will be out for the season. I read that (Newcastle's Fabricio) Coloccini could be out for seven weeks (with a similar injury) but we are not sure how long Tim will be out for because, obviously with a goalkeeper, he has to dive around and hit the ground.

"I have let him go away for a few days. It might be that, if everything goes well, he misses next week's game as well [against Manchester City] and then because of the international break he might be close after the rest because that would be four weeks."

Moyes revealed Howard had not suffered an injury to weight-bearing bones and also that they were not part of the player's spine.

"It just needs a bit of healing time. It is not like a pure fracture where you need to wait to look at it.

"It is a question of whether he can cope with the pain. The bones will heal themselves but it's not good."

Everton boss David Moyes has not made a decision on goalkeeper Tim Howard's fitness for the FA Cup tie with Wigan.

Howard has a back injury and if he is not passed fit then Jan Mucha will replace him. Centre-back Phil Jagielka is out after surgery on an ankle injury so John Heitinga is set to deputise.

Wigan have fit-again pair Adrian Lopez and Ryo Miyaichi back after hamstring and ankle problems, respectively.

Striker Callum McManaman and midfielder Fraser Fyvie may also feature.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• This is only the 18th meeting; Everton have won nine and lost two of the previous 17.

• Wigan's only victory at Goodison Park was 1-0 in their very first league visit in September 2005. The visitors lost this season's corresponding Premier League fixture 2-1 on Boxing Day to goals from Leon Osman and Phil Jagielka, having held the Toffees to a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium in October.

• Their only previous FA Cup clash was in the fourth round on this ground in January 1980, when Everton breezed through 3-0 with goals from Brian Kidd, Bob Latchford and Joe McBride on their way to the last four.

Everton

• The FA Cup offers David Moyes the best chance of a first trophy as he approaches the 11th anniversary of his reign as Everton boss next week.

• Moyes guided the Toffees to the final in 2009 and the semi-finals last season, and has overseen one defeat in 10 FA Cup outings and suffered just three eliminations from their last 10 pairings with fellow Premier League clubs; Wigan is their first top-flight opponent in this season's run.

• The Merseyside club have lifted the silverware five times, most recently in 1995 under Joe Royle, but have only managed three clean sheets in 17 FA Cup matches, and none this season.

Wigan Athletic

• Wigan, who are coming off a 4-0 home loss to Liverpool in the Premier league last time out, are appearing in the quarter-finals for the first time since their club record run to the last eight in 1987.

• This is the fourth successive away match in the FA Cup for Roberto Martinez' side (including one replay), and their first tie this season against fellow Premier League opposition.

• The Latics have beaten only two of their last 10 top-flight sides they have met in the FA Cup since 1987; Sunderland in 2008 and Hull in 2010
